Robert Knighton
December 3, 1943 - July 4, 2013
Robert D. Knighton (Bob) our beloved husband and father passed away peacefully at home July 4, 2013.
Robert was born December 3, 1943 in Pocatello, Idaho to Samuel Charles Knighton and Mary Allene Kent. He grew up in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1962 where he was involved with the Young Democrats and the declamation speech team. He had the opportunity to introduce then presidential candidate John F. Kennedy at a presidential rally in Pocatello. This was a highlight in his life.
Robert served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1963-1965 in what was then the Northern California Mission.
Robert married Carol Gay Puglsey on August 6, 1966. He received his Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Idaho State University and then his Masters from University of Washington in Seattle. During this time, bob and Carol had their first and most adorable child, Dana, while living in Washington.
After graduation, Bob and Carol settled in Twin Falls, Idaho to raise their family. Bob was employed as Senior Speech Pathologist for the Adult/Child Development Center for 16 years, specializing in pediatric speech. During this time they were blessed with another daughter, Christy and 9 years later again with the addition of their only son, Ryan.
After 16 years in Twin Falls, bob and Carol moved the family to Ogden, Utah where Bob worked for Intermountain Health Care as a speech pathologist specializing in trauma and stroke patient rehabilitation. The family still resides in the Ogden area.
It was during their time in Twin Falls that Dad got involved with the Twin falls School Board. He served as an elected trustee for 6 years, vice-chairman for 1 year and chairman for 2 years from 1977-1986. This was something very close and dear to his heart.
Dad was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as 1st counselor in the bishopric, Elders quorum president, Young Men's president as well as many other positions. He had a special talent and understanding of the youth in the church.
Robert was a wonderful father and adored his children and grand-children. He had a quick wit and hilarious sense of humor. He loved a good story and to just sit and visit. He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing at his secret fishing holes in Island Park and Alturas Lake. Politics was his hobby and he followed the state of the country very closely.
Robert is survived by his wife of 46 tears, Carol Gay; three children, Dana Kern, Christy (Mark) Kelly, Ryan Knighton; six grandchildren, Justyne (Bryce) Johnson, Dain and Maddisan Kern, Emma, Tori and Wyatt Kelly; one brother Kent (Barbara) Knighton of Boise, Id.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his mother-in-law.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 9th, 11:00 a.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street where friends also may visit with the family Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and from 9:45-10:45 prior to services. Interment: Aultorest Memorial Park.
