Hassell W. Davaney Obituary

Hassell W. "Jim" Davaney

83, of Indianapolis, IN, peacefully passed away to be with the Lord on January 20, 2013. Born in Bon Aqua, TN, on June 15, 1929, to the late George and Addie Davaney, Jim was the youngest and last of seven children. A graduate of Dickson High School, Dickson, TN, Jim went on to proudly serve as a sergeant in the Second Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, 1951 to 1952. He returned to the states and met his life partner and loving wife, Patricia Cummins. They just celebrated 60 years of marriage in December 2012.

Residence was taken up in Detroit, MI, while Jim attended Wayne State University, where he completed his electrical engineering degree. With his wife calling Indianapolis home, they soon moved back to Indianapolis where he embarked on a rewarding 38-year career with Eli Lilly, where he never missed a day of employment and enjoyed many corporate activities.

Jim gave back to the community through his charter membership at Southport Christian Church, and involvement as a 50-year member of Southport Masonic Lodge #270 F&AM. Jim's favorite hobby was riding his motorcycle with his close friends and two sons.

Jim was a kind and generous man and a mentor to many. He made sure that all that needed a helping hand got it, including all the animals that crossed his doorstep. Jim will be greatly missed, but knowing that he is safely home with his Lord and Savior is of great comfort to all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and two sons, Charles and Gary, both of Indianapolis.

The family wishes to whole-heartedly thank the professional, caring physicians and nurses at Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center.

Private funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, Greenwood, IN, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the or the Indianapolis Humane Society. To leave the family online condolences, please visit We encourage family and friends to visit the site and share a special story or memory about "Big Jim."
