Helen Jean M. Nugent

Died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Franklin United Methodist Community Rehabilitation Center. She was a resident of the Franklin United Methodist Community.

She was born on October 14, 1934, the daughter of John Isaac and Ruth (Mather) McClelland. On December 27, 1956, she was married to Paul T. Nugent who survives. The couple had three children, Paul Jean (Gene) Barickman, Thomas James Nugent, II, and Ruth Nugent. Dr. Nugent is also survived by two grandchildren, Anna Jean (Stephen) Price and David Mark Barickman. In addition, she leaves one sister, Natalie Tobin, two nieces and a number of cousins.

Dr. Nugent graduated from Franklin College where she was a member of Psi chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority. She also held graduate degrees from the University of Illinois, Indiana University, and Michigan State University. She taught at every level from remedial elementary through graduate courses, but her primary work was at Franklin College where she founded and directed the Canadian Studies program. Following retirement she served one term on the Franklin College Alumni Council. She was a member of several honorary organizations:

In addition, Dr. Nugent was a life member of the Association for Canadian Studies (Canada), the Association of Canadian Studies in the United States. She was a charter member of St. Andrew's Anglican Catholic Church. She was also a charter member of Clan Maclellan (U.S.).

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. Services will be conducted by Bishop Rommie M. Starks at the Franklin College Chapel, Friday, February 8th at 2:00 p.m. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Canadian Studies Program at Franklin College or to St. Andrew's Parish of the Anglican Catholic Church, and/or to the Franklin United Methodist Community. A complete obituary may be read at:
