Mildred S. George Macdonald

99, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, passed away at 7:15 a.m., Friday, April 20, 2012 in Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette.

She was born November 23, 1912 in Indianapolis to the late D. Austen and Pearle (Grider) Sommer. In 1929 Mildred was in the first graduating class of the new Shortridge High School and received her B.S. degree in Business from Indiana University in 1934.

She worked for L.S. Ayres & Company from 1936 to 1939 in the advertising department and from 1939 to 1946 as an executive secretary at Allison Division of General Motors Corporation.

She left Allison to earn her Masters in Education from Butler University and began a teaching career at School #67 where she taught 4th grade until retiring in 1972.

Her first marriage was to L. Ray George in Indianapolis in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1970. She later married John R. Macdonald in 1972 also in Indianapolis and he preceded her in death in 1997.

Mrs. Macdonald was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ attending the Eagle Valley Church of Christ in Clermont. She was also a charter member of the Indianapolis Zoo and was affiliated with local historical societies.

Mildred enjoyed bowling and photography and kept detailed logs of her travels throughout the world. She composed and distributed thousands of copies of her little "values" booklet to elementary schools and youth groups.

Surviving is her son, Richard S. "Rick" George (wife: Ann) of Brookston; a sister, Alice Erbe of Atlanta, GA; her sister-in-law, Anna Sommer of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, David L. George (wife: Kristin) of Elberfeld and Jennifer A. Brummett (husband: Sean) of Brookston and her 4 great-grandsons.

Preceding her in death with her parents and husbands are a brother, D. Paul Sommer; three sisters, Helen Achor, Hilda Arden and twin sister, Mary Clissold and a granddaughter, Julie D. George.

Friends may call from 12 p.m. (noon) until the time of private family funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Crown Hill Cemetery, Gothic Chapel. Interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
