Dr. Wayne Franklin Echelberger, Jr.

78, of Tampa, Florida, died on Saturday January 19, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was born in Pierre, South Dakota on October 23, 1934. He graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and received an MS in Public Health and an MS and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan.

He had a long and productive academic career as a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He held academic positions at the University of Michigan (1964-65), University of Notre Dame (1965-73), Indiana University (1973-83), University of Texas-El Paso (1983-89) and the University of South Florida (1989-99), the last two serving as Professor and Department Chairman.

He was a member of Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church, Tampa Rotary Club, Triangle Fraternity, and many different engineering organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Iris Violetta "Vi" (Davila) Echelberger.

He is survived by his sons, Dr. Jeffrey Echelberger (Bonnie) of Louisville, Kentucky and Michael Echelberger (Penny) of Georgetown, Texas; grandchildren, Drew and Mitch Echelberger of Louisville, KY and Austin, Ashley and Brady Echelberger of Georgetown, TX and a sister, Rita Potas (Les) of Benson, Minnesota.

There will be a memorial service at Noon on Saturday, February 9 in Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church, 420 Bullard Parkway, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, with reception to follow.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Temple Terrace Presbyterian Weekday School Scholarship Fund at the church address above.
