Jim Portteus, 87

Jim Portteus, 87, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014 at The Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway in Newburgh,Ind.

Jim was born on the family farm Feb. 3, 1926 in Newton County near Raub, Indiana to George Harold and Mary Brown Portteus. In August 1950 he married Susie Wright, who survives.

Jim grew up in Raub Methodist Church and was a current member St. John's United Church of Christ in Boonville, where he sang in the choir and served as church Treasurer for many years,as well as Council President and on other committees & offices.

Jim was a Director of Peoples Trust & Savings Bank. He was a member of the original Warrick County School Board and served many years on the Ohio Twp. Public Library Board.

He was a lifelong farmer and was President of Wright Packing Co. until its closing in the early 1970's.

Jim was a 1944 graduate of Kentland High School, served two years in the US Army Band and graduated from Purdue University Class of 1950, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was a member of Purdue Ag Alumni Association, member of Warrick County Farm Bureau, Warrick County Soil & Water Conservation District, and 4-H Fair Board.

He loved all kinds of music, especially Big Band and Barbershop, and installed that love in all of his children. He enjoyed Castle High School band and drama activities for more than 45 years.

Jim was a longtime follower of Purdue University and Castle High School and Boonville High School sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law George R. Parker.

In addition to Susie, his wife of sixty-three and half years, he is survived by children; James Steven Portteus wife Cheryl of Raub, Ind., Donald A. Portteus wife Tina of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Terri S. Patterson of Chandler, Ind., Wendy K. Fulks husband Tim of Pearl River, LA., David J. Portteus wife Aimee of Plymouth, Ind., eleven grandchildren, Brian (Cyndi) Portteus, Katie (Kyle) Robinson, Ralph Patterson III, Ryan Patterson, Patrick Patterson, Andy (Katie) Fulks, Megan (Jonathan) Hill, Cory Fulks, Josiah Portteus, Ella Portteus & Libbie Portteus, three great grandchildren, Austin Robinson, Hailey Robinson, & Adelaide Portteus, one sister, Ruth Portteus Parker of Alta Loma, CA, brother in law, Gus Wright and wife Ruth of Chandler, Ind., and one niece & three nephews.

Funeral service 11am Friday, Jan. 24 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Boonville. Rev. Robert Shofner will officiate the service. Friends may call Thursday, 3-7pm Jan. 23 at Koehler Funeral Home-Boonville Chapel and Friday 10am until service time St. John's United Church of Christ. A memorial service Saturday 1pm CST at Raub United Methodist Church with visitation 12 noon until service time with interment to follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Kentland, Ind. with military rites.
