Ruth Elizabeth Moran

Ruth Elizabeth Moran, 75, of Lafayette, died on Monday, February 17, 2014 at IU Health Arnett and is now at peace, following a nearly four year battle with cancer.

She was born on November 20, 1938 in Chicago, IL to the late Oscar J. and Grace M. (Radius) Swanson.

Ruth graduated in 1955 from Loring School for Girls in Chicago and went on to graduate from Purdue University in 1959 with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education.

On August 15, 1959, she married Thomas F. Moran in La Grange, IL and he survives.

After a year of living and teaching in Indianapolis, they returned to Lafayette where Ruth became involved with many community activities. She was a 50 year member and an Elder of Central Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, was an advisor to the high school youth group, a member of Circle 19 and Trestella, and coordinated cooking many congregational meals. She participated in 35 Home Hospital Fairs, co-chaired two of the early Taste of Tippecanoe festivals, and was a member of the Friends of Purdue Convocations Advisory Board. She was active with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra Friends Committee, the Lafayette Symphony Guild, serving as Treasurer and President, was a member of the Play Selection Committee and acted with Civic Theatre, was an advisor for the Delta Gamma Sorority undergraduates and served on the Delta Gamma House Corporation Board, serving as President for many years. She was a member of Monday Club, Drama Club, Garden Club, AY Chapter of PEO, and John Purdue Club.

Ruth worked as a Kindergarten teacher in the Lafayette School Corp. for 7 years; was a real estate closing agent for two Realtors; and was a travel agent with the former Irvine Travel Service for nearly 30 years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, entertaining and spending time with her family.

Surviving with her husband, Thomas F. Moran, are her children, Katherine Meeks (husband: Cyrus) of West Lafayette, Virginia Welsh (husband: Christopher) of Aledo, TX, Kent Moran (wife: Catherine) of Lafayette, and Leslie Goeldner (husband: Kevin) of Aledo, TX. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Andrew Meeks, Kristin and Kaitlin Welsh, Ian and Nathan Moran, and Grace and Seth Goeldner.

Ruth was preceded in death by her half-brother, Harry Swanson.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 23 at 2 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. William Smutz officiating. A reception will follow the service in Fitch Parlor at Central Presbyterian Church.
