Gretchen Ann "Grete" Weber

Notice Condolences

Weber, Gretchen Ann "Grete" Passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 5, 2013. She was 79 years old. A lifelong resident of the Village of Merton, Grete was born, raised, lived her life and died in the same house. Growing up on the farm with her four brothers and two cousins next door lead to an active life for Grete. Not to be undone by all those boys, she learned to drive a tractor at the age of five and could clean a chicken with the best of them. She attended what is now Divine Savors/Holy Angels School and Quincy University in Illinois. Returning home from Quincy, she became actively involved in the community, participating in activities including softball, bowling, and tennis. She was a member of the Lake Keesus Women's Club. Grete was quite the social butterfly and so enjoyed the company of her many, many friends. She worked for the U.S. Postal service, beginning her career as a postal clerk serving under the Postmaster of Merton, her brother Marty. She became the Postmaster upon his retirement. Grete retired from the Postal Service in 1989, having served 30 years for the government at the Merton Post Office. After her retirement, Grete spent many, many hours volunteering at her lifelong parish, St. Charles. She enjoyed taking communion to nursing home residents, helping out in the kitchen for funerals, Sunday morning donuts and the annual spring clean-up. She especially looked forward to her Tuesday morning Mass and breakfast group. Grete is survived by and will be greatly missed by her brother Andy (Lil) Weber and her sister-in-law Louise Weber, and her many nieces and nephews, most notably by nieces Ellen (Thomas) Sizer and Sue Weber and her Weber nephews: John (MaryJo), Mark, A.J. (Susan), Jim (Silvia), Greg, Jeff and Kirk (Rita). She loved being the great-auntie to twelve and great-great-auntie to two. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Sr. and Gretchen C. Weber and her brothers Marty Jr., (Mary), J.R. and Tom (Sheila) and her nephew Michael Weber. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 11 at St. Charles Catholic Church, 313 Circle Drive, Hartland with visitation from 9:00 AM until Mass at 11:00 AM. Private inurnrment will be in St. Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Charles Parish would be appreciated. Rest peacefully Grete, knowing we all 'loves ya'.
