World War II hero
dies at 94

Don Carr Jones, dedicated father, loyal friend, passed away on December 26, 2012. He was 94 years young. Don was one of eight children born to Jennie and Frank Jones, in Brawley, California. Don fought in World War II, serving in the Third Infantry Division, famous for its war hero Audie Murphy. Don became a decorated soldier and is credited for being the first American to carry ashore at Casablanca the U.S. flag when American troops invaded French North Africa in 1942. He received the Purple Heart for his wounds in the Sicilian campaign. Don held various positions at a number of newspapers, including the San Diego Tribune, Long Beach Press Telegram, News Pilot and the Daily Breeze. An avid poet, Don served as president of the Writers Guild in the late 1970s. He had written over 100 poems. Don was a man of character, strong morals and was selfless in his dedication to family and friends. He was the life of the party with an impeccable sense of humor. He is survived by his two children: Janice and Dan Jones and three grandchildren: Justin and Jennifer Mao-Jones, and Sean Chapman, a sister, Vera Gillespie, and former wife, Dorothy Jones. A memorial service and celebration of Don's life will be held at Conejo Mountain Funeral Services in Camarillo on January 4, 2013, 10am to 11:30am, reception follows.
