Richard J. Shaak MYERSTOWN Richard "Dick" J. Shaak, 85, formerly of Emmaus, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. He was the husband of Doris V. (Berky) Shaak, to whom he was married 65 years on June 19, 2013. Born in Jackson Twp., on June 11, 1928, he was the son of the late John E. and Myrtle B. (Wolfe) Shaak. A 1946 graduate of Myerstown High School, a 1951 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, and a 1959 graduate of Lehigh University, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of Myerstown U.C.C., and a lifetime member of the Myerstown Lions Club and the Myerstown VFW. He was employed as a teacher at East Penn School District, Emmaus, for 25 years, where he retired in 1975. He also worked as a coach and assistant principal at Emmaus High School. Following his retirement from education he worked as a nursing home administrator in the Lehigh Valley, retiring from Mosser Nursing Home in Trexlertown in 1995. He will be remembered by many in the Lehigh Valley for his involvement with the Emmaus Lions Club, St. John's U.C.C. of Emmaus, and other local services. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susan L., wife of Glenn Crossley of Redmond, Wash.; a son, Richard J., Jr., husband of Linda Shaak of Whitehall; grandchildren, Peter and his wife, Keri Crossley, Sara Crossley, and Kyle and Katie Shaak; great-grandchildren, Jack and Thomas Crossley; a sister, Jean Noll of Newark, Ohio; a brother, Frederick, husband of Sally Ann Shaak of Myerstown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Kaufman. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Myerstown U.C.C., preceded by a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the "Church Improvement Fund" of Myerstown U.C.C., 310 W. Main Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067. Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
