Patricia Ann Margarette Lavra Obituary
Patricia Ann Margarette Lavra St. Johns Patricia Ann Margarette (Wright) Lavra of St. Johns, MI passed from this life to the next on Monday, February 3, 2014 at the age of 83. As a mother, the occasional sting of a flyswatter from her let you know you were being bad. But such a gentle soul she was. She couldn't see a morel mushroom at the tip of her toes but could see a broad pallet of color in the finest little lichens and mosses all around her on the forest floor. She was born in Detroit to Samuel J. Sr. and Margaret Wright on December 12, 1930, the oldest of three children. Being a city girl, she learned to love the outdoors from the love of her life, her husband, Al Lavra (a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran), who preceded her in death. After graduating from The Cranbrook Kingswood High School for Girls, Pat combined her gentle soul and keen eye to become an art teacher, receiving her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University. She started her career by briefly teaching at the Detroit School for the Deaf and Lansing Eastern High School. Pat went on to head up the art department at the Marvin E. Beekman Center in Lansing, teaching art to mentally and physically handicapped children, from the school's opening until she retired. Pat loved books and reading. She spilled that passion over to her two grandsons, whom she loved dearly-always the teacher. Pat loved reading about faraway places of the world and was able to travel to China and the British Isles after she retired. She made friends wherever she went. Her favorite spot was a place known only as "The Farm" which was a slice of heaven just outside of Johannesburg; MI. Pat loved art and especially the art that nature created. She would teach her children about the wild flowers, shrubs, trees and all things wild of Michigan. There would be no stone unturned as she hunted for agates, Petoskey stones or just a pretty rock along the Lake Superior shoreline. Oh yes, she was a rock hound too. A mother, grandmother, wife, sister aunt, artist, teacher, naturalist and a whole lot more - that was Patricia Ann Lavra. Pat is survived by her sister, Mary M. Martin (Larry); daughter, Wendy A. Lavra; stepson, David C. Lavra; son, Albert C. Lavra (Michelle); grandsons, Albert R. Lavra and Daniel P. Lavra; brother-in-law, Capt. John Lavra USN Ret. (Marolyn) and sister-in-law, Lynn Wright. Pat was also preceded in death by her parents, and younger brother Samuel J. Wright Jr. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Chaplain Rich Mitterling officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1:00 pm until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Michigan Chapter 101 E. Grand River Ave. Lansing, MI 48906.
