Columbus, GA- CSM (Retired) Eddie Lee Roberts of Columbus passed Wednesday. He was 64 years old and resided at 4808 Freeman Court.
A son of the late Bessie Evans-Roberts and the late James Williams, he was born on October 23, 1946 in Pensacola, FL. He was educated in the Pensacola Public School System and obtained an Associate degree in Criminal Justice from Florida State University, and a second from Troy State University. He also achieved two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in General Education from the New York State University and the other in Business Administration from Troy State University. He earned a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University.
CSM Roberts was a member of the M. L. Harris United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, Usher Board and Chairman of Church Administration Board.
During his 30 years of military service, he earned the highest rank attainable for an enlisted service man. His military education includes Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, 3rd Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy, 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Drill Sergeant School, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Ranger School, Jump Master, Jump School, Air Assault and Pathfinder.
At the end of his military career, his civilian career started at CB&T where he became Vice President of Military Affairs at Sand Hill, 30th AG Battalion.
His awards and declarations include: Legion of Merit, Purple Heart with Oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Army Accommodation Medal with 2 Oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal (10th award), National Defense Medal with Bronze star, Vietnam Service Award (3 tours), Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Develop Ribbons (5), Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (4), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Unit Citation Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Wings, Pathfinder, Jump Master Wings, Drill Sergeant badge, Order of St Maurice Medal and Inducted into RTB Ranger Instructor Hall of Fame and the 1st Recipient of The William Bainbridge Distinguish Service Award and numerous other awards, declarations and accommodations.
His civic organization affiliations includes: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Controllers' Civic and Social Club, Inc, Muscogee Rotary Club, Sergeant Majors Association, 555th Airborne Association, Past Commander of Military Order of the Purple Heart, Board of Directors of National Infantry Museum, Past President of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, NAACP, Board President of the House of Restoration and a member of the American Legion Post #267, as well and many others.
He leaves to cherish precious memories; his dedicated and loving life partner, Joann Flantroy; three sons, Eddie L. Roberts, Jr., Marcus Flantroy, and Leandrick Roberts; five daughters, Angelia Grice Roberts, Chanda Roberts, Brittany Roberts, Khalilah (Mitchell) Roberts-Givens, Chantell Roberts; ten grandchildren, one great grandchild; four sisters, Carrie Bradley, Louise Hurry, Marie Ann Williams and Gloria Jean (Arrie) McDonald; six brothers, James (Annie) Williams Jr., Robert (Gloria) Williams, Stanley E. (Sheila) Roberts, Clifford Williams, Jimmie Lee Williams; three aunts, Hattie (Rev. James) Butler, Sadie Hercule and Katie Burch; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Ceremony for CSM Roberts will be held Wednesday, 11:00 am at the Main Post Chapel, 1680 Ingersoll Street, Ft. Benning, GA with interment following in Main Post Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Visitation is Tuesday beginning at 1:00 pm at the Funeral Home with a Memorial Service at 7:00 pm at M. L. Harris United Methodist Church. The cortege will depart from the residence at 10:15 the day of the service. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc.
