Anne Thomas Andrews

Obituary Condolences

ANDREWS, ANNE THOMAS, Anne, whose legacy is that of a loving wife, mother, teacher and volunteer, passed away on April 7, 2014. Whether she was home or in the classroom, she provided a loving and positive environment and people naturally gravitated to her.

Anne was born in Charleston, West Virginia on March 27, 1953, however, she considered herself a Louisville, KY native. She was the oldest daughter of Charles Grant Thomas and Cornelia McHenry Thomas. Anne graduated from Westport High School in 1971. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College and then transferred to Western Kentucky University to be with her future husband, Steve Andrews. Anne and Steve started dating in high school and after graduating from college were married in Louisville. They moved to Crestwood, KY, where they had their son, James Beaumont Andrews. Steve was transferred to Indianapolis in 1990 and in 1994 they had their second child, Cornelia (Cece) Key Andrews.

Anne was devoted to her family, friends and to the children she taught. She started her teaching career in Louisville, teaching first grade at John F. Kennedy Elementary. Anne later taught first grade for Kentucky Country Day. After having her son, Beau, she became a stay at home mom. Anne devoted herself to her family, their farm and tennis at Audubon Country Club.

After moving to Indianapolis, Anne joined the Junior League of Indianapolis where she became involved in volunteering. The family joined the Indianapolis Racquet Club and the Indianapolis Yacht Club to continue their passion for tennis and boating. Once Cece started high school, Anne began working for Washington Township's AVID Program in which she mentored and tutored students. She was later recruited by the After School Achievers Program to assist students with their English and their studies. Anne was truly adored by her students.

Anne was an active member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and did volunteer work. Anne found helping the less fortunate and homeless most rewarding.

Anne is survived by Steve, her loving husband of thirty seven years; son, James (Beau) Beaumont Andrews of Louisville, KY and daughter, Cornelia (Cece) Key Andrews of Indianapolis, IN; brothers, Joseph Grant Thomas, Sr. of New Bern, NC and Carl McHenry Thomas, Sr. of Louisville, KY; sister, Laura Hunt Thomas of Louisville, KY and her many beloved nephews, nieces and in-laws.

A visitation will be held on April 11, 2014 at the Flanner Buchanan Funeral Home, located on 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, IN, 46220. Friends can pay their respects between 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 5500 North Meridian Street United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, 46208 on April 12, 2014 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Anne's memory may be made to the Indiana University Dance Marathon that benefits Riley Hospital for Children. Donations can be made online at or a check made out to Riley Hospital for Children in care of Cece Andrews.
