Retired Lowell Fire Fighter

LOWELL -- Anthony J."Tony" Cassella Jr., 76, of Lowell died Sunday January 13, 2013 at the Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus after a long illness.

Tony was the husband of Elizabeth (Busby) Cassella with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on June 27.

Born in Lowell on Feb. 24, 1936, he was a son of the late Anthony and Gertrude (Connolly) Cassella. A life-long resident of Lowell, Tony graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1953 and earned an Associate's Degree from North Shore Community College.

He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, having served in the US Air Force and attained the rank of Airman First Class.

Tony worked for the Lowell Fire Department for 20 years before retiring Sept. 30, 1980 as a Lieutenant. After retiring he worked for the Lowell Firefighters Credit Union.

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and member of their Holy Name Society, St. Vincent DePaul Society and as an Adult Advisor for CYO. He also was a member of the Retired Lowell Firefighters Association and the VFW Post 662 of Lowell. He was an avid sports fan who loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. In his younger days he was a coach for Youth Baseball for Shedd Park.

Besides his wife, he survived by five sons and their wives, Anthony III and Paula Cassella of Lowell, MA, Michael and Laura Cassella of Nashua, NH, Paul and Brenda Cassella of Dracut, MA, William and Karen Cassella of Lowell, MA and James and Karen Cassella of Lowell, MA; three daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth "Betty Ann" and William Phillips of Lowell, Maria and Jeffrey Tretola of Lowell, MA and Theresa and David Patenaude of Dracut, MA; two cousins, Robert Page and his wife, Ann Marie of Lowell, MA and Jacqueline Whaite of San Diego, CA; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Mary and Garrett Quinlan and Elizabeth Busby all of Lowell; twenty four grandchildren, Sarah, Stephen, Christina, Michael, Caitlin, Alyssa, Brent, Cameron, Kian, Molly Cassella, Shelagh Parent, William, Thomas, Alycia, Matthew, Morghan, Olyvia Cassella, Liam and Maggie Philips, Brandon and Holly Tretola, Jessica and Jocelyn Patenaude; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his step-mother, Juliette G. Cassella, his granddaughter, Jordan Patenaude, and three brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws, George and Mary Busby, William F. Busby, Raymond and Eleanor Busby.
