Paul Gages, Jr.

MANSFIELD: Paul Gages, Jr., 87, of Mansfield, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 2, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1926 in Springfield Township, Ohio on the family farm to the late Erma Leone (Conley) and Paul Gages, Sr.

He was a graduate of Springfield Township High School and played basketball while there. He remained an avid Ohio sports fan all his life.

After graduation he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a gunner. Paul was very patriotic and proud to have served this wonderful country. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #7651 in Ontario where he was the designated coffee maker. He was past Commander and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Paul was a pilot and owned private aircraft for many years. He enjoyed reading about and studying WWII history. Paul was a member of WWII Night Fighters Squadron and attended their reunion every four years.

Paul was employed at McKinley Roofing and Sheet Metal for over 40 years. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #38. He was generous with his time and talents, always willing to help anyone in need. A man of integrity, he respected those who respected themselves. His friends knew they had a special man whom they could trust completely. Known affectionately as "Uncle Junie", his family was most important to him.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vivian Mentzer Gages; a son, Trent (Cindy) Gages of Valley City, OH; daughter, Vickie (Greg) Dalton of Ontario; grandson, Rhett Dalton of Columbus; sister, Margaret Bogantz of Mansfield; sister-in-law, Dorothy Mentzer of Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Grant Gages; brothers, Glenn and Lee Gages; and four sisters, Jesse Harlan, Vera Light, Vivian Martin and Eleanor Rinehart.

The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2013 in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. A funeral service will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Dennis Rinehart officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Online guest registry at
