Albertus N. (Bert) Schroeder Obituary
Albertus N. Schroeder (Bert) Bert Schroeder lived a full life of 92 years and passed away peacefully on August 15, 2013 in Novato, California with family at his side. He was born in Washington, D.C. on May 15, 1921 to Albertus and Ida Schroeder. He was joined later in life by brothers Robert and Herman, who both preceded him in death. In 1939 he graduated from Central High School in Washington, D.C. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY in 1945, and Master of Arts degree from New York University School of Education in 1968. Bert's professional life consisted of 20 years of Merchant Marine service as a chief engineer with the Military Sealift Command. He then served our country for 20 years in the United States Coast Guard, reaching the rank of Commander. Bert is survived by his loving wife, Helen; daughters: Linda Cordray, (Merritt) and Diane Germann, (Peter); and son Donald, (Cheryl). Bert is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One of the greatest legacies he leaves is his marriage of 67 years to his "bride" Helen. Bert practiced his Christian faith by caring for and sharing with many people over the course of his life. He was noted for the practical care and assistance he gave to family and friends alike. An avid outdoorsman, Bert loved fishing and especially enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish at Eagle Lake, California. Bert will be missed by all who knew him for the genuine concern and compassion he showed to many people in his life. Friends are invited to attend a military honors burial service at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 12:30 pm. Friends are also invited to attend a memorial service that will be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 2 San Marin Drive, Novato, CA on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be sent in Bert's name to Novato Human Needs Center, 1907 Novato Boulevard, Novato, CA 94947.
