Rebecca M. "Becky" Murphy Obituary
Rebecca M. "Becky" Murphy

EDISON: Rebecca M. "Becky" Murphy, age 64, of Edison, died Saturday afternoon, January 11, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous 13 year battle with breast cancer.

On June 22, 1949, Becky was born in Williamsport, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ruth Stiffler. She graduated from Fredericktown High School in the Class of 1967, and attended Judson University in Elgin, Illinois.

Shortly after returning home from college, Becky began working at the United Telephone Company in Mount Gilead, where she worked with Carol Zentler Levings. Carol, would then arrange for Becky to go on a blind date with her brother, Dwight Murphy. They quickly realized they were a good compliment to one another, opposites attracting. They shared a long distance courtship, with Becky taking advantage of her free long distance calling at work to connect with Dwight, who was going to tech school in Indiana at the time. They were married on September 22, 1973, and have cherished their 40 years of marriage.

After the birth of their two children, Becky stayed at home to be a loving homemaker and helping farm hand for Dwight. Her family was first and foremost each and every day of their lives. Becky became experienced in operating farm equipment and providing dinners on the tailgate of the family's pickup truck. When her children were grown and in school, she went back to work as a receptionist for Dr. Brian Bachelder in Mount Gilead for many years, and later at the Smith Clinic in Marion.

To be further involved in her family's lives, Becky was a member and former treasurer for the Morrow County Pork Producer's Association, she was a 4-H leader, and she had helped with the Edison Baseball and Softball Associations.

"A remarkable seamstress", Becky could sew together most anything you could think of, such as her children's school clothes, their Halloween costumes, and much much more.

An avid James Taylor fan, Becky played his music when doing household chores, driving, or just sitting around the house. J.T., as she called him, became part of the family and every time he came to Columbus to play a concert, Becky went to see him in person. A recent interest of Becky and Dwight's was antique tractors. She was a member of the Morrow County Antique Tractors Club, and even got her own antique tractor, a 1932 Case Tractor.

Thirteen years ago, Becky was given the news of having breast cancer. She handled that news with grace, never questioning, never complaining and having a positive and optimistic outlook about her fate. She then became very involved in the Race for the Cure in Columbus, participating in seven races, using a simple word as her motivation…believe. Her cancer went into remission for over 10 years, and then it came back with a vengeance two years ago. She again was inspirational, and had an unwavering faith.

In addition to being loving, generous, kind and many other glowing adjectives that would appropriately describe this amazing woman, she also had a great sense of humor. She could be silly and make even the worst of situations seem funny. She had a heart of gold, was accepting of everyone, and made you feel as if you were a part of her family.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Dwight Murphy of Edison; two children, Jenifer (David) Burnaugh, Esq., of Fredericktown, and Michael (Carri Jagger) Murphy of Bellville; a grandson, Joshua Burnaugh; a sister, Jody (Bruce) Seaburn of Mount Gilead; and a nephew.

Including her mother, Becky was preceded in death by her grandson, Jacob Burnaugh.

Her family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14th, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life and courageous, positive spirit will also be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. Dennis Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in care of Hospice of Morrow County, 228 South St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.
