Gloria Mohr Obituary

Published by San Jose Mercury News/San Mateo County Times on Feb. 24, 2016.
Gloria Mohr
Feb. 22, 1932 ~ Feb. 19, 2016
Resident of San Jose
Gloria Mohr was born February 22, 1932, in New York City, New York. She had a professional dance career in which she danced as a soloist with the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine. This took her to many opera houses around Europe where she performed. After 10 years of performing, she opened her own dance studio, The International Ballet School, in Campbell, California, where she taught and coached dancers. She did this from 1958 until she retired from her studio in 2014. This was not the last, though. She, then, was brought on board to coach at Silicon Valley Ballet which was very much to her liking. In the mid-to late 1960s, Gloria had her son, Michael, and her daughter, Brigitte, who adored her. She would attend their baseball games and tennis matches. Gloria passed away, suddenly, from a heart attack on February 19, 2016. She leaves behind her son, Michael Mohr, her daughter, Brigitte Mayo, and two grand sons, Keenan Mayo and Aidan Mayo, and a companion, Richard Meyers.

Gloria was one of my first ballet teachers. I remember how beautiful she was and how her dancing and teaching inspired me to achieve. She was also a beautiful person and I miss her very much. My mother used to baby sit her son, Michael, so I felt like I was part of her family too. I love you Gloria!! Thank you for all the years of inspiration and beauty to brought to so many people. Rest in peace.

Our Valentine's card to Gloria was returned, and now I see that she died several years back. Gloria was a kind and encouraging teacher and a dear woman. Both of our daughters, Mikha and Mary, took ballet from Gloria and looked forward to her expert, supportive guidance. She not only helped her students gain skill, she contributed to their development as people.

Long after our girls left ballet, attended college and graduate school and became mothers themselves, Gloria continued to be interested in them.

I am so sorry for your loss, and count myself lucky to have known Gloria, and glad for the positive influence Gloria had on our children.

With sympathy,
Marsha Palitz-Elliott

I met Gloria when I took her ballet classes at West Valley College in Saratoga, CA. I will always remember her as a wonderful teacher and amazing dancer. After I graduated from West Valley, she hired me to do some PR for her dance school and we worked together for over a year until I moved away. I also had the privilege to study Flamenco dance with her at her school. It was such a treat to listen to the many stories she shared about her dancing days with Balanchine at the New York City Ballet.

Thank you for the opportunity to share some fond memories about such an amazing woman, who strongly influenced my life.

Dear Richard, Michael, and Brigitte,
I am in shock to read about dear Gloria. She was my teacher at West Valley and then she also taught my daughters and cousin. We also had great fun doing flamenco together at her studio. Throughout the years we stayed in touch and had gotten into the habit of meeting for lunch about every 6-8 months. We would trade stories about everything including our personal lives and our loved ones. She always spoke in glowing terms about all of you, but especially her grandsons. She was such a beautiful lady, so articulate and intelligent. Her passing is a tremendous loss, but what a blessing to have been able to know her.

Miss Gloria was my ballet teacher from the time I was 6 years old until I graduate high school. I cannot imagine growing up without her stories of the ballet and joy for dance. I'm truly sorry to hear she passed. She was a very special and kind lady, I feel blessed I knew her.

Brigitte and Michael,

I know you don't remember me, but my mom used to babysit for you two now and then when your mom was teaching. Gloria was one of my first dance teachers; I started with her and Marie when they had that little studio on Campbell Ave and I continued on with her for many years, into my teens. I studied with her when she was with Paul Curtis in Los Gatos and I always admired her tremendously.

Your mom was a lovely dancer, a wonderful person and an inspiration to me. I just read of her passing today and I was shocked. She was always the picture of health. I feel a great void knowing I will never see her again. She gave me so many years of grace and beauty and I will miss her tremendously; I will never forget her. You have my
deepest sympathy.

With love,

Debbie Herring

Gloria was as bright as any candle. I will miss her greatly. I met her when I took her ballet & flamenco classes at West Valley College. I was part of the Flamenco Group that used to meet at each others homes for lunch in the late 1980's and early 1990's. She had the best stories.

Much love to all her family and her wonderful Richard. You all were part of those stories :)

Love, Jea

Dearest Richard, Michael and Brigitte.
I am so very heartbroken to learn of Gloria's passing.
She was a precious friend and mentor to me for many years! I was honored to meet the family in 1975 and last heard from her at Christmas 2015!
My love and deepest condolences to you all!
I only heard the news today and don't know if there has been, or will be a memorial service!
I would love to know if it is open to friends! It would take a huge building to contain all who loved her!
My love and prayers to you, Lisa Flores

My two sisters and I studied with her in the 60's and 70's. She will be remembered as a wonderful teacher and most gracious woman.

Enthusiastic ballet teacher that glows with energy, and has a big smile when she enters the classroom - we will miss you. So sorry to loose you, never met a teacher that taught adults with the same passion and details and watched over them as they were kids. My deepest condolences to the family.

What a fantastic person to have had in one's life! Gloria Mohr was a vivid and brilliant character and someone who imbued her instruction with a love of the heights of great art. I remember very well how a class of young people pushed itself, grabbed music and throttled it, because Gloria gave you permission to be Big. Rest in Peace, dear Gloria.

Hello -
My mom, grandmother and I met Gloria many many years ago by way of SF Ballet's dance season. Gloria sat directly behind us. We always enjoyed catching up with her & chatting before the curtain rose on performance days! She was very loving and comforting to my mom when my grandmother passed in 2014 at the age of 99. She had a wonderful disposition, loving heart/spirit and we will miss not seeing her on Sundays at the ballet.
Our sincerest condolences to you and your families.
Peace,
Laurene Schlosser & Arlene Margetich
