Thomas J. Costello, 85, of Colonia, died Monday, October 08, 2012 at the Mary Anne Hale Pavilion of Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Perth Amboy on February 3rd, 1927, he moved to Iselin in 1952, and has been a resident of Colonia since 1972.

He was an Navy Veteran of WWII. Tom was a third generation funeral director. In 1954, he established the Thomas Joseph Costello Funeral Home in Iselin, which he operated for 56 years, retiring in 2010, when the business was passed on to his nephew Jay continuing the family tradition. Tom graduated from Perth Amboy HS in 1945 and McAllister Institute of Funeral Service of NYC in 1949. He also attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in NY, Rutgers College and the F.B.I. Academy in VA. He was a world traveler, artist, and loved to bowl ski, golf and play bocce ball. He was an avid cook and gardener. He was a Fourth Degree Member of St. Cecelia's Council Knights of Columbus of Iselin, becoming a 50 year life member in 1997; member and Past President of the Middlesex and Somerset Funeral Directors Association and member of the National and NJ Funeral Directors Associations. Tom was a past member of the Washington Engine #2, Exempt Firemen Association of Perth Amboy, a life member of Iselin Fire Co. #1 and a member of the Iselin-Colonia Exempt Firemen Association. He was made an Honorary Life Member of the Iselin First Aid Squad in 1982 and named Man of the Year in 1986 by the Iselin Post #2636 Veterans of Foreign War. He was a charter member of the Colonia B.P.O. Elks Lodge of Colonia, member of the Colonia Post American Legion since 1945 and past president of the Edison Bowling League. He was a past president of the Iselin Democratic Club. He served as Middlesex County Morgue Keeper a member of the Medical Examiners staff for 19 years, member of the Woodbridge Township Council from 1957 thru 1965 and Woodbridge Police Commissioner from 1961 thru 1963. He served on Woodbridge Planning Board and the Board of Health.

Tom was predeceased by two wives, Rita Van Pelt (1962) and Catherine Wehrenberg (1974); his mother Helen F. Demko (1997), father Joseph V. Costello, Sr. (1974), a sister Helene Kennedy (1992) and a brother Joseph V. Costello, Jr. (2001). Surviving is his wife, Josephine Joan (Zullo Fedor) Costello; daughters Janice Fedor, Judith and her husband Mc Kessler; a sister Mary Anne Hale. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will take place Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 8:45 AM from the Thomas Joseph Costello Funeral Home Green St. & Cooper Ave. Iselin, followed by a 9:30 AM Mass of The Resurrection at St. John Vianney RC Church in Colonia, interment is at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
