BARBARA HERBICH Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2009.
HERBICH--Barbara Kathleen, 55, of New York passed away on October 17, 2009, in New York City. Services are set for 1pm Wednesday, October 28, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bryan, Texas. Barbara was the daughter of John Bronislaw Herbich (1922-2008), who fled his native Poland during WWII and was a world-renowned ocean engineer, and Margaret Pauline (Boylan) Herbich. A 1972 Bryan High School graduate who studied journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, she attended University of Strasbourg in France. In 1977, she received her Bachelor of Arts in French literature from UT and then moved to New York and received her Master of Arts degree from Columbia University as a President's Fellow. Her passion for her Polish heritage was ignited when she visited Poland in 1970 with her father and frequently returned to Poland to organize conferences and consult on emerging entrepreneurship in the Eastern bloc. At the time of her death, she was working on two films: a rough cut of a documentary about the persecution of Polish priests by the Third Reich, and another film devoted to the destruction of the Polish intelligentsia under the Nazi occupation. Her films tackled important political and historical topics, giving them a nuanced, human face. "Stitch for Time" was nominated for an Academy Award in 1988 and a later film, "USSR Art," documented the groundbreaking Sotheby's auction of Russian avant-garde and contemporary underground art held in Moscow in 1988. Both were aired on PBS stations. An indefatigable, creative personality with a good sense of humor and finely-honed flare for self-irony, Barbara is survived by her mother, Margaret (Boylan) Herbich; brother, Gregory; sister, Patricia Herbich O'Connor; and nieces, Kaya O'Connor and Aleksandra Herbich. Donations may be made to the Beverly Sills Greenough and Meredith Greenough Multiple Sclerosis Fund, 733 Third Ave., Third Floor, New York, NY 10017. Services are entrusted to Hilli-er Funeral Home, www.hillierfuneralhome.com.

I knew Bobbi in Austin. I visited her once in NY, decades ago. She took me to a wonderfully bizarre off-Broadway play, and we laughed a lot and then got ice cream. I never spoke with her again. I moved to NY two years ago, looked up her phone number and put it on my list of things to do. I am so sorry for your loss. I will not forget her.

It was 1982 0r 1983 and I had just flown into New York from Tokyo and Pat had said, "You must met my sister." So I did. I emerged from the elevator at the Algonquin Hotel, dressed in very Japanese black, and I don't know what I was expecting or what she was expecting, but Barbara wasn't what I expected. Several hours, and drinks, later the Herbich brand was even further emblazoned on my heart and has never left. I am so sorry to hear of this loss and send all my love to you all and for always.

I met Barbara in Paris, then in NY. We share support during some writing works. She "tutored" my first steps in the american society and culture, and I tried to teach her the french way of thinking and writing.
She was the most generous and funny girl, a light always shining in my mind, overs years and oceans.
Now she's in the "firmament", j'en suis profondément peinée et adresse à Patricia et à toute sa famille, mes très sincères condoléances.

Dear Herbich Family,
I just found out about Barbara's passing. I am so shocked and stunned. I am in New YOrk and had spoken with her not so long ago. We had a great discussion about her dad whom she loved so much. THere will never be anyone to fill the void she has left in this world. I am really going to miss her!
Sincerely,
Sandra Hill

I was Barbara’s part-time assistant during the last six months of her life. During that brief period, we became very close, working together, eating together, and sharing stories. Barbara loved to talk and was full of stories; she was a wonderful listener as well. I loved her spontaneity, her enthusiasm, her generosity, and her warm heart. She is one of the closest friends I have ever had.

Barbara was a talented passionate filmmaker. Her films were always concerned with peace, justice, art and her concern was to make the world a better place. I am profoundly saddened by her death. It is tragically, too soon. She had a lot of work to do. I will deeply miss her.

Barbara was a very kind, beautiful and sensitive person and the world is a much poorer place without her in it. She had a great love for many different places: Texas, Poland, New York, Hawaii and Russia to name just a few. She also had a great love for many different types of people. She touched all of them with the legacy of her energy and her laughter.

Bobbie was always a such a sweet and honest friend through high school with a fun side that you had to love. She had many accomplishments later on that I wasn't aware of. A beautiful spirit rare in this world.

Stunned to hear about Barbara's passing. I imagine her dancing somewhere now with Phillip Hourwich. I knew Barb within the group that grew up with Philip in NYC. It wasn't til recently that I discovered her amazing background and accomplishments. I only knew how fun and funny she was.
I'm sorry I don't get to know her better, but grateful for knowing her as well as I did. Unforgetable.

My sincere condolences to the Herbich family. There is no doubt you are very proud of Ms. Barbara's acheivements as she led a rewarding life. I have taken comfort that loved ones I have lossed in death do not suffer. God's Word assures us that 'the dead are conscious of nothing at all'. Its as if she's in a deep sleep. So this refutes the idea that our loved ones suffer. I hope this brings you some relief. My family and I look foward to God's promise that 'death will be no more' and that soon we can see our loved ones again (John 5:28,29). Again my sincerest apologies for your great loss but I am sure God will give you 'the power beyond what is normal' to endure this difficult time.

It is odd how the mention of a name can open a floodgate for memories. Bobbi was always so great to everyone she met - always laughing. The time I spent with her (junior high through high school) was memorable, her accomplishments in life were remarkable. I'm so proud to have known Bobbi. May God's peace be with her, her family, friends and colleagues.

Barbara and I met in Moscow in 1988, and she was so infinitely reassuring to me in what was then such a strange context for us both. She was so much at ease and made that whole experience feel so much like an adventure instead of a crossing into a land of terror. Our friendship after that trip was a source of great joy to me--we would laugh and laugh, and her zany sense of fun was an endless delight to me. I will miss her always.

I will never forget the "adventures with Bobbi"(and Janet!)or the Christmas she spent w/ my family. She was pure human energy, a force both positive and unpredictable. Never dull, always the exception and NEVER the rule. Mrs. H., Patricia, and Greg, I hope you find comfort and peace in the memories shared thru her friends. I am certain anyone who knew her, from NY to HI., for minutes or decades, will miss her immensely.Love, Gibi
