HOOVER--Gilbert C. Jr., 87 of New York City, died Thursday, August 4, 2011, peacefully at home after a long period of failing health. He was born in Washington, DC, on March 14, 1924, son of the late Martha Smith and Rear Admiral Gilbert C. Hoover, After graduating from Brown University's ROTC program in 1945 he served as an Officer in the US Navy. In 1952 he married Mary Bidgood Rand. He and his wife Mary had a love affair with New York City. Throughout their lives they were active in Democratic politics, social justice and environmental causes. An avid reader, he had a long career in the publishing business and enjoyed fishing, painting, drawing and music. He was predeceased by his wife Mary. He is survived by his sisters Katherine Miller of Bloomfield, CT and Ann Wood of Scotch Plains, NJ; his daughter Mallory Smith and son-in-law Philip De Cillis of Port Angeles, WA; his daughter Katharine Lee and son-in-law Jere Truer of Minneapolis, MN; his son Win (Gilbert C. Hoover, IV) and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Quint of Brooklyn, NY; and his grandchildren Emily and Matthew. We will miss you! Private arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to VNSNY Hospice Care at 1250 Broadway, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or the Arts Student League of New York at 215 W. 57th Street, New York, NY 10019.
