Martin Griffin

Martin Joseph Griffin, Sr., 77, Major, U.S. Army Retired, of Cape Coral. FL passed away on February 8, 2013. He was born June 21, 1935 in Pittsburg, PA, the son of the late John A. Griffin and Catherine Quinn Griffin. He graduated from McKeesport High School, PA in 1953, he then enrolled in Gannon State College in Erie, PA where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959 and proudly served two tours in Korea and one in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal. After returning from Vietnam, he and his family moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he attended instructed R.O.T.C. at Henderson State University and completed his Masters Degree in 1974. Prior to retiring from the Army in 1979, he relocated to Cape Coral and taught at Cape Coral High School for 18 years, retiring in 1997 to enjoy his "Days in the Sun" Martin was an active member and Past Post Commander of the Harney Point V.F.W. Post 8463, a member of; the American Legion Post 90, Fraternal order of Eagles Aerie 3957, Elks Lodge 2596, all of Cape Coral.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Cecilia; son, Martin (Shirley) Griffin, Jr.; daughters, Loretta (Hank) Weil of Palm Bay, FL and Cecilia (Michael) Vivace of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Melissa, Christopher, Anthony and Samantha; three great grandchildren, John, Brenan and Addison; brother, Regis (Myra) Griffin of West Mifflin, PA; niece, Katherine Becker; nephew, Regis (Andrea) Griffin, Jr.; great nephew, Kyle; and great niece, Audra.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Thursday at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, followed by Military Honors by the Honor Guard, V.F.W. Post 8463. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions, in Martin's memory may be made to the VFW Honor Guard Post 8463, Cape Coral.
