Michael Lance Wieringo, died suddenly Sunday evening, August 12, 2007 in his home in Durham. He was 44 years old. Mike was born in Vicenza, Italy on June 24, 1963.
Mike graduated from Rustburg High School in 1981 and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Illustration. Beginning his career as a comic book illustrator in 1991, Mike soon gained the worldwide respect of his peers and fans alike as one of the top artists in the field. He worked on nearly every major publication but was proudest of the book Tellos, his own creation. Mike was a lover of animals, a kind and generous person, a good friend and a loving and much-loved son and brother.
Mike is survived by his parents, Cecil E. and Shirley Dean Wieringo of Lynchburg, VA; his brother, Matt Wieringo and wife, Suzanne of Richmond, VA; his beloved cat, Charlie.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 17, 2007 from the chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. An additional ceremony celebrating Mike's life will be held at a date to be determined in Lynchburg, VA, where Mike grew up.
