George James, of Hackensack (formerly lived in New Milford from 1956-1999) pass-ed away on January 18, 2014. Beloved husband of sixty-one years of Stella (nee Harlan). Loving father of James and his wife Sally, Robert and his wife Karen, Diane Kwitnicki and her husband Stephen. Adored grandfather of granddaughters Dana, Laura, Ana and Emily. George was born on May 9, 1928 to Greek immigrants, James and Sophie Vagias, in New York City and raised in The Bronx. He served his country in the Army Medical Corps from 1946-1948. George was a graduate of New York University's School of Education and School of Physical Therapy. George also played football for NYU. He began his career as a physical therapist at the Bronx Veterans Administration. George served as Director of Physical Therapy at Montefiore Medical Center for 35 years. In addition to writing numerous articles for various professional journals, George served on the faculty of Hunter and Ithaca Colleges as well as New York University. George was a charter member of St. Anthony's Orthodox Church in Bergenfield. His greatest joy was his family and one of his proudest accomplishments, other than his family, was being recruited to try out for the New York Yankees. Visitation at the Barrett Funeral Home 148 Dean Drive, Tenafly on Sunday, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM. Funeral Service Monday 11:00 AM St. Anthony's Orthodox Church Bergenfield. Interment George Washington Memorial Park Paramus.
