Captain William Freeman Mims

Athens - Captain William Freeman Mims passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 in Athens, Ga. He was born the son of Oscar Lee and Lucy Griffin Mims, January 26, 1917, in Atlanta, Ga.
Billy attended Boys High in Atlanta where he earned all-state honors in football before enrolling in the University of Georgia in 1936. He was an All-SEC halfback for the UGA football team, as well as captain of the baseball team and a member of the basketball team.
Upon receiving his BS in Commerce in 1940, he was commissioned into the U.S. Navy Supply Corps and married Dean Nowell, who died in 1971. Captain Mims had a distinguished military career which included being the first Executive Officer of the U.S. Naval Supply Corps School in Athens.
Captain Mims retired from the U.S. Navy in 1961 and moved back to Athens where he was an account executive for Merrill Lynch. He was a former member and president of the Athens Touchdown Club, Gridiron Secret Society, Rotary International and the Georgia Student Education Fund. He was also the incorporator of the NSCS alumni association.
Captain Mims is survived by his loving wife, Carol Lee Mims, and his daughter, Melinda Lee Mims Deriso, both of Athens. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Melinda Deriso Allen and William Mims Deriso; and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Griffin Allen, Walser Haddon Allen IV, Dana Ellington Allen and Wiliam Mims Deriso Jr.
Pallbearers for the service will be William M. Deriso, William L. Fleming, Frederick B. Tyler, Michael N. Tyler, Edward E. Patton and James C. Turner.
The visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday, July 25 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Bernstein's Chapel at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 26.
