Lt. Commander Retired Keith Austin Reynolds passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013. He was 89 years old. Keith will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, his generosity and keen intellect. As dramatized in the movie Men of Honor, Keith was the real life Commander of the USS Hoist which did locate and recover an American Hydrogen bomb that was jettisoned at sea by a failing American bomber. Though this had placed him on the world stage for a brief period in time, in typical Keith fashion; his family learned of this historical event when his ship and the name Commander Reynolds were mentioned in passing in the movie.Early in his career he was on board submarines and in the last few years, he became reacquainted with some fellow submariners who meet regularly. In a twist of irony, his passion was helping this organization run a program for children with cancer called Kaps 4 Kids. He was active right up to the point when he was diagnosed with cancer in late November. In addition to Keith's submariner experience, Keith was very active in the community as a member of the Boca Raton Sunset Rotary Club. He was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and actively supported a program that provided over 30 thousand dictionaries being personally given out in Palm Beach County to all third graders in public and private schools!Keith loved the sea, loved the Navy and he loved his country. He called the shots right to the end. He was at peace with his life, at peace with his Lord and waited for his sister to arrive Sunday morning to say her goodbyes before letting go. Earth's loss is Heavens gain. There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life Sunday, March 3 at 4:00 PM at the chapel of Spanish River Church at 2400 Yamato Rd in Boca Raton.
