Dr. Edward Stanley Avery, Jr., 92, died Friday, May 14, 2021 at his home in Norfolk, VA. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Dr. Edward Stanley Avery and Florence Blake Avery. Dr. Avery was predeceased by his brothers Blake Avery, Erwin Avery and Dr. Walton Avery, and his son-in-law Dr. Paul "Pepper" Prillaman.
He is survived by his wife, Lee Ann Curtis Avery, their children and spouses, Ann Rodman and Gary Shook, Hannah Prillaman, Waightstill and Brook Avery, Adelaide and Dr. Christopher Turnbull, Clark and Catherine Avery, and his sixteen grandchildren, Ross, Avery, Rodman and Eliza Grace Shook, Walker, Ellis and Hughes Prillaman, Straeten, Leah and Meredith Avery, Charles, Owen and Ella Blake Turnbull, and Lucy, Camilla and Emma Avery.
Dr. Avery was raised in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from Reynolds High School. He was a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served in the United States Marine Corps and was a graduate of The UNC School of Medicine. He practiced pathology at Norfolk General Hospital until his retirement in 1995.
An avid golfer who loved caring for his lawn, Dr. Avery was a devoted Tar Heel fan who rarely missed a game. He was a member of Cedar Point Country Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Norfolk German Club. He served on the Board of Directors of The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.
Burial will be private and a Celebration of Life will be held at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Virginia Zoo.
