Norfolk - John Joseph "Shawn" O'Connor, loving son, husband, brother, uncle, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday April 7, 2013. He was a native of Flushing New York. He was predeceased by his parents John Joseph and Evelyn Lowe O'Connor and his sister-in-law Ginny Koch Frye.
Shawn served his country in the United States Army and was a decorated Vietnam veteran. He graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in Psychology and later earned his Masters in Social Work. He resided in Norfolk from 1970 to 1978 where he met and married the love of his life. Shawn and Terry lived out his dream on a yearlong sailing adventure. He then embarked on a 30 year career as a hospital administrator and CEO working in St Simons Island GA, Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, Florida and California. Returning home to Norfolk in 2001, he worked as a consultant until retiring in 2010.
Shawn was a Roman Catholic and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Terry Koch O'Connor, and his sister
Jennifer Cuttone and her husband James. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law Robert and Jacqueline Koch, brothers and sisters-in-law Bobby Koch and Diane Wall, Steve Koch, Charlie Koch, Vicki Koch Foglia and her husband Bob,Mary Jo Koch, Richard Koch and his wife Vicki McLeod, Jack and Mary Frye, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday,April 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. by the Reverend W. Daniel Beeman. A Christian Wake service will be held in the church on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date at Albert Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
