Laurel Midura-O'Brien

Virginia Beach - Laurel Ann Midura-O'Brien, 61, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2014 with the loving comfort of her spouse and daughter by her side. She is a San Francisco, California native and the daughter of the late Walter Spaelti and Kathryn (Nolan) Spaelti.

She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-four years, Gilbert "Gil" O'Brien Jr., daughter, Nicole Frances Midura; sister, Eileen Brooks and her husband, John, brother James Spaelti and his wife, Natalie; nephews, Jimmy Brooks and his wife Stephanie, Rick Spaelti and his wife, Abigail; nieces, Stephanie Spaelti and her sons, Giovanni and Dominic, Jennifer Spaelti and her daughters, Isabella and Josie, Cynthia Brooks, Ligia and Natalia Spaelti. She was preceded in death by her older brother, Stephen Spaelti.

Laurel served as a loan officer for Wells Fargo and enjoyed many passions including gardening, sailing, floral design, jewelry making, cooking, traveling, and helping people. She served on the board of directors for a non-profit organization, HOPE in the Upper Room and helped numerous homeless residents of Virginia Beach, was an avid volunteer for local nursing homes and the Acts of Kindness Program under the Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater.

Although her twenty-four year battle with breast cancer has ceased, she will forever remain a survivor to her immediate family, friends, and the countless lives she touched during her lifetime. Laurel was a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 23 years.

The funeral ceremony will be held Friday at 9:30am at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Ave, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30pm on Thursday at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Maestes Chapel, 1801 Baltic Ave, Virginia Beach. Online condolences may be offered at www.altmeyer.com. While flowers will be greatly appreciated, please send donations to the and Sentara Hospice Home of Virginia Beach in honor of Laurel.
