Peter Akmentins

Appleton - Appleton, WI - Peter Akmentins, 82, of Appleton, WI went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 14th, 2021 after battling Type 1 diabetes for close to 60 years. Peter was born on March 24th 1938, in Latvia and lived there until 1944 when he and his family were forced to flee their homeland as the Soviet Army overran and occupied Latvia. Peter and his family were settled in a displaced persons camp in Bavaria, Germany. In 1950, Peter and his father, mother, and sister, Astrida, emigrated to the United States and eventually became proud citizens of the United States in 1956.

Peter attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an emphasis in civil and mechanical engineering; he spent his working career with companies focused primarily in the paper industry.

Peter married the love of his life, Audrey (Gill), on December 5th, 1964. In his late twenties, Peter committed his life to Christ. His devotion to his family, friends and faith was known by all. He will be remembered for his wonderful smile, twinkle in his eye, quick tears, gentle spirit, friendship, and his love for his family.

Peter enjoyed fly fishing in streams near Iola, WI, Badger football, downhill skiing, walking, participating in and leading Bible studies, coffee with friends at McDonald's, golfing, music, and mowing the lawn.

Peter is survived by his wife Audrey, son William (Sarah) Akmentins, daughter Elizabeth (Rob) Sax, and daughter Kristin (Steven) Stout. Peter is also survived by eight grandchildren whom he loved dearly and were the joy of his life - Julia Akmentins, Rafael Akmentins, Charlotte Sax, Caroline Sax, Isabella Stout, Emma Stout, Gabriella Stout, and Jack Stout.

Peter was preceded in death by his father, Peter Akmentins and mother, Blazma Akmentins Rankin.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Bible Church in Neenah on Tuesday, January 19th, at 2pm, with Covid-restricted visitation from 1 - 2pm. Face coverings and social distancing are required. The service will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend on the Valley Funeral Home Facebook page.

One of my brother Don’s very best friends from back in high school days and then through the years. Dear Audrey, how broken hearted you must be at this time, but could there ever have been a better man than Peter. I am very saddened at hearing of your loss just now from my brother. I know that Astrida must be deeply wounded as well. I remember back in the 2nd or 4th grade at Edison Elementary that she was my flame. I knew I loved her for sure. She was the only one in the class, as I recall, who could run faster than I. And she had this really neat big brother Peter that I always looked up to and admired over the years. I so wish we could all go back in time. Love to all the family,

Peter was always a joy to see when he came to his doctor’s appointments at Ascension. Although I am no longer a patient registrar there, Peter is very fondly remembered.

What a wonderful, delightful and caring man. We had the honor of living next door to Peter. We were blessed with wonderful stories of his youth, conversed on politics, today’s children and religion. He was an enlightened man of great morals and we are so thankful to have shared his time and views. Thank you for being such a sweet man.

Saddened to hear of Peter’s passing, we will miss him. Our prayers for strength, God’s comfort and guidance in the days ahead. I will miss his discussion of Bible studies and of his love of family. And although Nancy and I cannot be there, we will be with you in prayer and spirit.

Thoughts and prayers for peace and healing going out to Pete's family. I worked for Pete at Hietpas, Inc. in the early '80's. I was impressed by his upstanding personality and convictions to family and religion that I have thought of him many times through the years. God Bless

Audrey and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Pete is in a much better place now with his Lord Jesus Christ. We were both in the class of 1957 at Appleton West High school. My stepmother, Bea, also knew Blazma well. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.
