Janis Rivenburgh Sledge Freer

Wassaic, NY - Janis Amelia Rivenburgh Sledge Freer, 80, a longtime resident of Wassaic, NY, died on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at New Milford Hospital in New Milford, CT. Mrs. Freer proudly served as a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force for 21 years retiring in 1993.

Born on February 27, 1933 in Sharon, CT, she was the daughter of the late Murray E. and Margaret Markert Rivenburgh. She was previously married to the late Jerry W. Sledge. On September 22, 1992 at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, she married James F. Freer who survives at home.

Mrs. Freer was a charter member of the Women in Military Service Association and a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association. She was member of the American Legion Post # 1949 in Wingdale, NY and a longtime member of the Amenia United Presbyterian Church in Amenia, NY.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, David W. Sledge and his wife, Lori, of Spotsylvania, VA; two daughters, Kathryn S. Mosely and her husband, Robert, of Spring, TX and Faith K. Fails of Sharon, CT and three sisters, Margaret Y. Deister of Wassaic, NY, Evelyn Handke of Wassaic, NY, and Phyllis Quinones of Lynchburg, VA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Christina Leone and her husband, Phillip, Jason and Elizabeth Mosley and Joshua and Walker Sledge.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Amenia United Presbyterian Church, Route 22 in Amenia, NY with Rev. Jan Brooks officiating.
