Buttolph, David L.

David L. Buttolph, 89, of Branford, CT, formerly of Vestal, NY, died Monday, April 22, 2013, after a period of failing health. He is survived by his wife, Ewa Borowiec Buttolph; his children, Katherine, Peter, James, Diana, and stepdaughter Agnieszka Rybkiewicz; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Howe Buttolph. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and saw combat in the Pacific. After earning degrees from Yale and Juilliard he became a Professor in the Music Department of Binghamton University. As an educator, David took particular pride in the formation and development of choirs, including The Harpur Chorale and The University Chorus, and from 1966-1988 conducted major choral works with orchestra. He also founded and directed the Elizabethan Madrigal Dinner evenings, and lead concert tours in the United States and Europe. Throughout his professional life and in retirement David shared his love of music through composing and arranging choral works, and he also found time to act in several Cider Mill Playhouse productions. A short service will be held on Friday, May 10, at Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, at 11 AM. The following day, Saturday, May 11, also at 11 AM, a memorial service will be held in the Dwight Chapel of Yale University, New Haven, CT. Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Shoreline Arts Alliance Scholarship Funds in Guilford, 725 Boston Post Rd, Guilford, CT 06437.
