Downs, James L., Jr.

James L. Downs Jr., 88, of Endwell, NY passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013. He was predeceased by his parents, J. Leo Downs Sr. and Elizabeth Downs, and his sister Mary Berg. James is survived by his wife of 67 years, June Downs; his daughters Kathleen Fenstemacher, Susan Downs Kost (Michael Kost), Laura Downs (David Figura) and son Christopher Downs and daughter-in-law Cornelia; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; also survived by sisters Elizabeth Perkins, Patricia Husband (Gary) and brother Richard Downs (Jean), and many nieces and nephews. Jim was an Air Force veteran, serving during World War II, where his plane was shot down over Hungary and he was rescued by partisan forces and smuggled back to safety in France. He worked for over 30 years at IBM, retiring in 1984. Before and after retirement, Jim and June traveled to many countries overseas and around the USA with very close friends, Etta and Ray Knapp. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 24 years. Jim bowled for many years and was an avid golfer, playing with good friend Eli Johnston, until shortly before his death. He played pinochle every month for over 50 years with his close friends. Jim was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday January 2, 2014 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis St. Endwell. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, NY. The family will receive friends at the Church of the Holy Family on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:30 a.m. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Meals on Wheels of Western Broome, 3311 E. Main St. Endicott, NY 13760.
