Don Stiles Maj Obituary
Maj (Ret.) Don A. Stiles

January 15, 1934

May 5, 2014

Maj Don A. Stiles, age 80, a long time Reno resident, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 5, 2014 from injuries sustained in an ATV accident at Sand Mountain, Nevada. Don was born in Pampa, Texas, the second of three sons of Estil and Inabelle Stiles. Don graduated from Liberty Union High School in Brentwood, California, where he was a talented athlete who was inducted into his High School Football Hall of Fame. A distinguished 20 year career as an Army officer followed high school graduation, which included two tours of duty in Viet Nam as a Ranger in the 101st Airborne - The Screaming Eagles, during which time he earned his Master Jump Wings and was awarded the Bronze Star. Don went on to serve his country in Japan, Thailand and Germany, before retiring as a Major in 1974. Don's love for excitement led to his interest in off road trail riding and sand duning. He filled the last 18 years of his retirement with experiences riding his quad, which kept him physically fit, engaged with his friends, and allowed him to enjoy life to the fullest, on his own terms. At Sand Mountain, where he enjoyed his last ride, Don earned the title of The Lone Ranger… "Kemo Sabe".

Don was predeceased by his parents, Estil and Inabelle, and his older brother Jack. He will live on in the hearts of his younger brother, Lynn G. Stiles (Reno High 1959), Lynn's wife, Marigene; nephews, Shon Stiles and Blake Stiles; nieces, Staci Stiles Beilfuss and Tiffany Stiles Feaster; and extended family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Obrien-Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home, 600 West Second Street, Reno, Nevada. Visitation begins at 11 a.m., service at 12 noon, and burial, with military honors, will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to Reno Christian Fellowship, 1700 Zolezzi Lane, Reno, NV 89511 (775-853-4234).
