Patrick Carnes Obituary

Patrick Francis Maloney Carnes

Our beloved Father, Patrick Francis Maloney Carnes, a retired Systems Manager, was declared deceased as of April 14, 2014. Dad and his faithful friend, Lucky the dog, went missing three years earlier, returning home to Reno from a family visit to Toledo, Ohio. His car was found at Exit 205 on Interstate- 80 in Nevada. To this day, there has been no trace of Dad or his faithful dog.

Patrick Carnes was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 30, 1925. A WWII veteran, he served as an Aviation Radioman in the Navy Air Corps from 1942-1946, participating in campaigns at Guadalcanal in The Battle for Solomon Islands, and the Landings and Action Battle on Bougainville Island, for which he received two citations. Patrick was assigned to CASU 10, a Carrier Aircraft Service Unit, under Pappy Boyington-Squadron Commander. After his Honorable Discharge in 1946, Carnes subsequently was recalled in 1947 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technician, until his second honorable discharge in May of 1950.

During his second enlistment in Southern California, he met the love of his life, Margaret Lilla Haltom, in Hollywood California. They were married on October 6th, 1949. Patrick went on to earn a BBS Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1953. The following year, he began his business career with Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, CA. After their retirement in 1981, they moved to Reno. They enjoyed traveling throughout the western US often visiting family in Ohio. They were happily married for 55 years until he lost Margaret in 2004.

Patrick is survived by sons Kenneth Carnes, Thomas Carnes, James Carnes, and daughter Judith Artrup, all of the Reno area, brother James A. Carnes, sisters Verna Rose, Nancy Edelman, and Jeanne McNeely all of the Toledo, Ohio area, and five grandchildren, Michael Moore, Lyndsey Ireland, Kelsey Taylor, Timothy Ruth, Thomas Ruth, and ten great-grandchildren, John, Peyton, Kinsey, Kobe, Brode, Brennan, Philip, Malcolm, Leaunna and Aidan.

Patrick, a devoted father and husband, was well respected by his friends and dearly loved by his family.

I've never forgotten Mr. Carnes and his dear dog Lucky. I read about his case and it stayed with me.

Mr. Carnes case affected me like no other missing persons case. For over a year I was obsessed with scouring the Wells NV area & 100 miles circumference for poss. areas he might be found. I also searched areas along I - 80 and 100 miles N & S. I saved every search (via Google maps) on my computer. I spent an average of 2 hours daily. I quit in June this year, because my best friend & husband of 39 years passed away on 5.15.21. I was his only caregiver for over 2 years. I hope & pray that Mr Carnes remains will be found soon This is my sincere wish & prayer.

My Uncle Pat, Was a great guy! May God continue to pour out his love over him and Lucky as they are so important to my family! Love you uncle Pat!

I always had a great respect for Uncle Pat, and every interaction I ever had with him was a good one. He encouraged me as a teenager to follow my dream of going west in a conversation we had and I will always remember him fondly for that. Hearing stories growing up of my Uncle Pat from my Mom Verna when I was young and then later of his Sons Ken, Tom & Jim in what seemed to me as adventures back then inspired me to move to Colorado and I would like to thank all of them for that inspiration.Uncle Pat was a well respected man in my family when I was young and still is to this day.

Much Love & Respect,

Grandpa pat was one of the nicest people I've ever met. We used to go with him to walk lucky on a hill by his apartment. He always loved playing with our son Malcolm. We would just sit and talk, he would tell me story's about his family and his life! We miss him so much!

Pat and Lucky... though we never met personally, I love you both. I will continue to pray for you both as well. Without concrete answers, I choose to remain hopeful. But, whatever the reality is... I know Jesus is right there with the two of you. To Mr. Carnes family... God bless and be with you always.
