Donald Garate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2010.
Donald T. Garate passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. He was born in Susanville, California and raised in Ravendale, California. He graduated from UNR with a BS in Animal Science. He was a family man married to Alice Nord for 39 years. He spent over half his life living on a working cattle ranch in northern California both ranching and as a custom saddle maker. The last half of his life was spent as an interpreter and historian for the National Park Service where he was able to expand his passion and gift for researching and recording history. He wrote and published 24 historical books, 6 unpublished works, and numerous historical articles. Don was fluent in English, Spanish and Basque, all self-taught. He was active in his church and community. His passing was simple, peaceful, and with his family around him.
Don was preceded in death by his father Thomas Garate and his 3 year old granddaughter Liliana. He is survived by his wife, Alice, mother, Faye, brother, Jon, and sisters Linda Phillips and Leanna Daugherty and six children and 15 grandchildren.
Agur Jauna.

Never had the pleasure to meet him, but loved his writing. My favorite was Termo to Madeline, as I was the District Road Machinist in 1979 - 81 on the S.P. I traveled many of the sites Don wrote about working out of Alturas to Flanigan NV. Wish I could locate a copy of his companion book - Red Rock to Ravendale for purchase. What a giant of a high desert writer !!

My sympathy goes out to Don's family. He was extremely helpful and unselfish in his aid to me and my research on Basque history. He was a fine, friendly man who will be missed. I'm fortunate to have known him.

We cannot attend the services on Friday but our hearts will be there.
Don touched us in so many ways that we feel an incalculable loss from his passing and frankly cheated by fate when there was so much more to share.

I have never known a man even close to Don Garate in terms of talents, accomplishments, generosity and deep human understanding.

Condolences to the Garate family. We share in your loss, pray for your reconciliation and cherish our memories.

Though I knew Don through his work and reputation, I never met him until I undertook the illustrations for the Anza Trail. When I visited him in Arizona, Don was terribly generous with his time and information, and treated me to some of his wonderful anecdotes as well. There will never be another like him.

Hello My name is Bruce Buonauro. I've known Don for the last 10 years. I met him at the presido pasados in San Fransico. His talent was incredible as a performer. I learned much from him by performing with him. To the Garate family I will celebrate his life. I am happy for having known him and happy for your life with him. with
Sincere Respect,

Don was an honored and great historical interpreter and a wonderful man to talk and listen to, and will be missed by all of us involved in Spanish Colonial interpretation. "Adios, estimado Capitan!"
