Mary Ellen Kerr was born in San Francisco to Eileen O'Keefe and Joseph Kerr. She received a Dominican education through high school and then enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley where she received a degree in zoology. Mary Ellen taught high school science for five years before joining the staff at the San Francisco Zoo which was then known as Fleishacker Zoo. She enjoyed working with a wide range of animals before finally assuming responsibility for the gorillas, a post she held for many years until her retirement. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

We were fortunate to meet Mary at Los Gatos Meadows and to share a lunch with her. She was very modest about her life with the gorillas, but once we found the right "button" she was off and telling us about her adventures and opinions. She was lucky to find her "life passion and live it". Our condolences to her family. We feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with her.

I can't think of Maryellen without thinking of the San Francisco zoo. Especially her tales of Bwana the gorilla who loved to watch baseball on tv. So many stories and memories that are a part of my childhood. I miss all of the Kerrs.

My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to Mary Ellen's family and friends. I met Mary Ellen at USF's Koret center about 5 years ago. What an amazing, modest, and interesting person she was and incredible life she lived. May she rest peacefully and her memory be eternal.

I remember taking my son, Dan, to the zoo when he was about 4 yrs. old and getting the special visit with Mae the elephant. Mary Ellen sure loved her critters. The photo captures her spirit so well.
