James Mulligan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2019.
James Thomas Mulligan

The Reverend James Mulligan, 76, passed away quickly and peacefully early Thursday morning, February 14, following eight years living with Alzheimer's. He was a gentle man, with a loving, helping heart, and a willingness to take unassuming leadership roles when and where needed, often behind the scene, and always with a great sense of humor.

Jim and his twin brother, Timothy, were born November 17, 1942, to Frank and Marjorie Mulligan, in Los Angeles, California. His family moved to Marietta, Georgia, where he graduated from Marietta High School, and Hampden-Sydney College, Virginia. He earned his MDiv to become a Presbyterian minister from Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, in 1968. With acceptance by Seattle Presbytery, Jim moved to Seattle in 1971 to become Pastoral Counselor at Presbyterian Counseling Service, (now Samaritan Center). He became an Approved Supervisor in the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists in 1979. Jim was recognized as an exceptional Family Therapist and Supervisor, serving for twenty-five years.

In June 1981, Jim married his loving wife of 38 years, Ruth Voskuyl Ferguson, and stepped into the role of engaged stepfather to Leslie, 14, and Karrie, 13.

Following a wilderness river canoe trip in northern British Columbia, Jim and Ruth were inspired to embark in a new direction. In 1992 they co-founded Earth Ministry, an ecumenical religious environmental non-profit, with Carla Berkedal Pryne, Episcopal priest. By 1996, Jim had moved to full-time involvement, becoming Executive Director. Jim served as a visionary leader for seven years, followed by eight years as devoted editor of the mini-journal, "Earth Letter".

Jim relished his time spent in nature at their beloved cabin on Harstine Island. He was an avid photographer of nature (especially birds) and family activities. The last six years of his life, he enjoyed participating actively in the dementia-friendly activities of the "Momentia" community (momentiaseattle.com). Jim was appreciated for his warm smile, big hugs, great sense of humor, and beautiful singing voice.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; brother, Tim (Kyle); stepdaughters Leslie David (Chris), and Karrie Sutkus (Don); and grandchildren Justin, Kaitlyn, Heather, and Erika.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's honor can be made to Earth Ministry's Jim Mulligan Memorial Fund (earthministry.org). A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, March 9, Saint Mark's Cathedral, 1:00pm. Jim's online Guestbook is at www.Legacy.com.

Dear Ruth and Family,
As Karrie's best friend in high school, I have many fond memories of cooking meals at your house with Jim, traveling to Cannon beach for vacations, and hiking through the woods. He approached a difficult parenting situation with such grace, patience, warmth, and determination. As a parent now, I frequently look back on how he parented with great admiration. Though I have not seen him in many years, I have kept tabs on him through Karrie and have been incredibly impressed with how he lived his life with such integrity and intention- he made an impact on so many people and so many organizations- he is an inspiration to us all. He will be sorely missed on this earth that he loved and fought to protect, but always live on in our hearts. Sending love and hugs to all of you!

Dear Ruth, I am sad to miss Jims life celebrationon Saturday. I remember him as such a gentle man when I got to know him as pastor to his parents at Richmond Beach UCC. I am grateful for his ministry and the legacy the two of you created through Earth Ministry. I celebrate the love you shared and the care you know doubt extended to him in these past years. We ran into each other a year or so ago at some event. Perhaps our paths will cross again. May you sense God near in your time of sorrow and feel Jim near as well. Sincerely yours, Joy Haertig

Farewell to my roommate during Freshman Year at Hampden Sydney. Jim we both wound up as Presbyterian ministers. You went straight to seminary while I took a 20 year detour through teaching in Spanish Harlem. We both became stepparents when we married. Jim I look forward to seeing you again in the Kingdom of Heaven. Until then may all the love and comfort you have given others be given to your family during this sad time. In Christ

Dear Ruth and Family, Jim will be greatly missed. He was an encouraging, perceptive, intelligent and thoughtful person. I so love his many photos of nature. I am so grateful for the key leadership role he played in starting Earth Ministry that was so instrumental in growing the earth ministry movement. I enjoyed working with him on the board of Presbyterians for Earth Care and in various ecumenical contexts throughout the years. Blessings and Peace, Jenny Holmes - Portland, OR

Jim and his brother Tm were my best friends during high school - especially the high school band. I wish I had known Jim later in life. I always knew he would be a loving and caring person.

Dear Ruth & Family,
This morning when I read Jim's obituary notice, my mind immediately went back to Princeton Seminary where I initially knew him. We spent weekends traveling and singing in the seminary choir. We had a surprise reunion when he came to Seattle and became a key person on the staff of Presbyterian Counseling Service. I was serving on the board during that time. His warmth, laughter and sincerity are etched permanently in my memory. Alzheimer's may diminish the mind but not the heart! Death may separate us physically but not in spirit!
