Daisy Dawson Obituary

Daisy Lee Tibbs DAWSON

Daisy Lee Tibbs Dawson was born the first of three children in Toney, AL on July 24, 1924. She passed away peacefully on May 26, 2013.

Daisy graduated from Trinity High School in Athens, AL and migrated to Seattle, WA where she spent most of her life. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington in 1948, and her Master of Education Degree, from Seattle University in 1981.

On April 22, 1950, Daisy married the love of her life, Leonard Ralph Dawson. Out of this love, four children were born. Daisy's husband, children, large extended family and friends, were the joy and dedication of her life.

Being an educator was always Daisy's primary career goal, and upon graduation, in 1949, she returned to the South and became a Home Economics Teacher. During that same summer, Daisy became affiliated with the American Friends Service Committee, returned to Seattle, and went to Hiroshima Japan, as a member of the "Houses for Hiroshima" mission. Because of this, Daisy has been forever memorialized in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Daisy began her career in 1965 as a classroom-aide for Seattle Public School District (SPSD). Later she became Director of the (SPSD) Head Start Program, until her retirement, in 1984.

Throughout her life, Daisy was immensely proud of and supported by her membership in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Other volunteer associations were, Altrusa of Seattle, President's Forum, Central Area Senior Center, United Blind of Seattle, and Neighborhood House. Daisy was a religious person. She was a founding and active member of First Grace, and then Madrona Presbyterian Churches.

Daisy was preceded in death by her third child, Calvin, her husband, Leonard, her sister Christine Tibbs-Major, her brother, Robert Tibbs. Daisy is survived by her three children, Leonard Jr., Debra, and Craig. Daisy has many living relatives. Daisy is also survived by three grandchildren, Cleavon Steele, Matthew Dawson and Carolyn Dawson.

I met Mrs. Daisy at the hair salon - my aunt styled Daisy's hair for years. As a young girl, I remember a sweet, little lady driving to the shop in a big Lincoln. It was a sight to see! Daisy was always sweet and commpassionate. I'm also fortunate to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and shared that bond with Daisy. She was a joy, and will be remembered in my heart forever.

Sending love to her family and friends,
Karinda Harris

My beloved Soror! Thank you for sharing that one of your proudest moments was wearing the cap and gown of Soror Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell (DST Sorority, Inc.) when you graduated from the UW in 1948. You have now joined
an innumerable caravan of Deltas who have left a legacy founded upon Christian principles and dedicated to service! Forever to remember you...

Daisy was such a special person! I was privileged to be mentored by Daisy when I served as Pastor at Madrona. She was honest, loving and wise. My prayers to the family, and all whose lives she blessed.

Was certainly sorry to learn of Daisy's passing. I was in Altrusa Club of Seattle with her for many years and always looked forward to hearing from her at Christmas. I know the family will miss her as she was always so loving and loved by her family. Sincerely Dellazine Moran, Edmonds, WA

As Directors of the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, we send our condolences to Daisy's family. We fondly recall her voluntary work with Floyd Schmoe in the Houses for Hiroshima Project of 60 years ago.
