Dirk Duane Miller Jr. Obituary
Dirk Duane Miller, Jr.

Shreveport, LA - A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Dirk Miller, 37, of Austin, Texas will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00pm at Calvary Baptist Church (9333 Linwood Avenue) in Shreveport. Immediately following the service, the family will receive guests in the new foyer area of the church.

Dirk was born on August 26, 1975 and left this world unexpectedly on April 8, 2013. Dirk was born and raised in Shreveport, having graduated from Byrd High School in 1993. He received a BA in Music Business from Middle Tennessee State. He was a talented musician, singer and songwriter who also loved sports - particularly playing golf and watching LSU and Saints Football. After living in a number of cities around the country, he settled in Austin in 2006. Aside from music, Dirk's other passion was teaching others about wine and food pairings and this led him to become a certified sommelier (wine steward). He recently started his own business glass2plate with friend and business partner Matt Taylor. The two formerly worked for popular Austin restaurant and wine bar Wink for a number of years and decided to found the glass2plate supper club in 2012 with Taylor as chef and Miller as sommelier. Their original events have been delighting guests around Austin for months. In the Spring of 2012, Dirk was nominated for Austin's Tastemaker award. Dirk was known and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his caring spirit, the creativity he expressed through cooking, photography, drawing, and other artwork and, of course, the passion he had for his work, wine, music, family and friends. He was loved by all who came to know him and will be truly missed.

Dirk was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, "Papaw" Lannon Miller; his maternal grandfather, Morris Sheppard Akins, Sr.; and his step-brother James Edward Carlton, IV. He is survived by his mother, Jeri Akins Carlton, and stepfather, Jim Carlton, of Houston, TX; father, Dirk, Sr., and stepmother, Jeannie Miller, of Liberty City, TX; brother, Darrell Miller, of Liberty City, TX; sister, Halie Miller Barnhart, and her husband, Joe Barnhart, of Liberty City, TX, along with his nephew, Colt Allen, and niece, Callie Jo; his grandmothers, Patricia Akins and Betty King, both of Shreveport, LA; his aunt Denee' Miller Locke and her husband Matt Locke, of Shreveport, LA, along with their children, Saige Wilhite Solomon and her husband, Chris, Beal Locke, and Remi Locke; his aunt, Tia Gurvitz, of Shreveport, LA, and her two children, Shira Gurvitz, M.D., of Lexington, KY, and Kelsi G. Harrington, and her husband, John Harrington, of Houston, TX; his uncle, Shep Akins, and his wife, Susan, along with their two children, Matt Akins, his wife, Kate, and son Maddax, and Elizabeth Akins, all of Fayetteville, AR.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dirk Miller to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486.
