NEW BEDFORD — James Wahnon, Jr., 94, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Hilda (Ferreira) Wahnon and son of the late James Wahnon, Sr and Antonia (Fortes) Wahnon.

He was born in the Cape Verde Islands and came to New Bedford in 1933. He was a WW II Army Veteran and retired after 50 years as a Merchant Seaman. Mr. Wahnon volunteered a great deal of his time at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Survivors include his five sons John Wahnon and his wife Suncha of Marana, AZ, James Wahnon III and his wife Annette, David Wahnon and Jeffrey Wahnon all of New Bedford, Richard Wahnon of FL; two daughters Brenda Lackie and Sandra Wahnon both of New Bedford; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters Mary Wahnon of New Bedford and Marie Miranda of RI; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening 5-8 PM at Rock Funeral Home. His Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 AM in the funeral home, followed by his interment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
