Age 99, formerly of Glen Ave., Town of Elmira, NY, and Woodbrook Adult Home, Southport, NY, died on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. He was a journalist, community and sports activist and historian. Survivors include son, Jon F. (Cheryl) of Clayton, NY and Fort Myers, FL; daughter, Priscilla E. Smith (William T. III (Skip) of Bluffton, SC and Venice, FL; grandson, Justin Smith (Denise) and their children, McKenzie and Madison, all of Downingtown, PA; granddaughter, Amanda S. Phillips (Robert) and their children, Davis and Evan of Bluffton, SC; nieces, Sylvia Anderson and Carolyn Johnson of Penn Yan, NY and Donna Vincent of Corning, NY; sister-in-law, Elaine Stermer of Grand Blanc, MI. Fred was predeceased by his loving wife, Carolyn Stermer Box; parents, Albert and Lena Box; brothers, Donald, Robert and Albert Jr. Fred graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1930 at the age of 15. During the 42 years with the Star Gazette, he worked in Corning, Hornell, and Elmira. Before retiring in 1974, he served as assistant managing editor and Sunday Telegram editor. During WWII, he spent 18 months in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy as a news correspondent aboard the USS Sagittarius writing the ship's newspaper and history. Fred was proudest of being a member of the Elmira City Emergency Planning Committee whose plans were used successfully during the 1972 flood. He was president of the Finger Lakes Seniors Golf Association, Elmira Lions Club, Town of Elmira Little League, Gannett Pioneers-Elmira and NYP Basketball League (Semi-Pro). Fred was awarded the Boy Scout Statuette for lengthy service as a cub master, Neighborhood Commissioner and Council Executive Board. The State Golf Association presented him a plaque for writing the first history, 21 years as historian and principal writer on the NYSGA News. In November 2012, Fred was inducted into the Inaugural class of the NYSGA Hall of Fame. An avid golfer, he played nearly 50 years at the Elmira Country Club winning the Senior Title in 1980. Fred was also inducted into the Corning Sports Hall of Fame for softball and was a member and past trustee of North Presbyterian Church.
