Lytton MARSHALL Obituary

MARSHALL, Lytton Bruce
Bruce Marshall, one of the country's best known and most published artists; also an internationally published writer, died May 23, 2015. He was 85 years old.

In his art, Marshall is best remembered for his expert portrayal of regional history and heritage, which brought him international recognition and many important commissions. Among his best known were: The Texas Citizen Soldier for the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia; Ten Historic Texans used as a cover for fifteen million telephone directories by Southwestern Bell; and The Patriot for the Mahler Student Center of Dallas Baptist University.

His honors included two knighthoods from the late Peter II, last king of Yugoslavia, the Order of the White Eagle and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Other titles created especially for him were: Artist of the 65th Texas State Legislature; Artist in Residence of the Texas Navy; and National Artist, CSA from the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Marshall wrote and illustrated three books: Uniforms of the Republic of Texas, Uniforms of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution and the Men Who Wore Them: 1835-1836, and his historical novel, City of Silver. Forty-four of his paintings hang in permanent museum collections, including the University of Texas' Institute of Texan Cultures at San Antonio, the Susanna Dickinson Museum, the San Jacinto Monument, and the Alamo.

His work was exhibited in a host of museums including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of the History of Man in Brussels, Belgium, and four times in the rotunda of the Texas State Capitol. The show he enjoyed most was put on by the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 1972, from which he had dropped out twenty years earlier after being told by a professor he had "no talent.

He is listed in Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Argosy magazine and other publications described him as "one of the three contemporary giants of Southwestern art" and as the "Rembrandt of the West."

Though best known for his art, Marshall was also an award-winning writer for the Houston Post before turning full-time to art, and his free-lance articles, often illustrated with his art.

Marshall was a Past Commander of the Department of Trans-Mississippi of the Sons of Confederate Veterans as well as Past Commander of the SCV Texas Division and of camps in Houston and Austin; Past President of the reactivated Hood's Texas Brigade Association; and Past President of Scots of Austin. He was an Admiral of the Texas Navy and life-long member of the Former Texas Rangers Association.

He was a descendant of two prominent pioneer Texas families. Confederate General John F. Marshall, editor and publisher of the Texas State Gazette and great-grandfather, Robert Eanes, donor of the first Eanes School near Austin.

Marshall is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann, and three children, Susanne Gregg, Randolph (Randy) Marshall, and Cody Eanes Marshall, and ten grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Harrell Funeral Home at 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Wednesday, May 27th, from 6-8pm. Funeral service will be at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Austin, on Thursday, May 28th, at 11am.

Bruce was a fellow alumnus of Texas, it's hills and it's history. He was also a friend. Splendid behavior-Robert Prosser

There are three words for Bruce: feisty, bright and talented. He was a man of his word and shared the last years of his life generously while doing his beloved work. Several of his works hang in the living room of Egon Tausch, who just moved on too. So fast the worthy and brave move on, as the Auld Lang Synes we shared.

"...Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time..." Alas, You have made your impression on the sands of time, You have shown us the way to go, You have marked the trail for us to follow, You have given us inspiration that overflows.

To a young boy he was a kind stranger who became an inspiration and life long friend.
I always felt I was in the presence of royalty when talking to Bruce.

Ann my prayers are with you. I enjoyed visiting with you and Bruce at the recent Edwin Moore Squadron Navy meeting. Bruce was a one of kind talent like no other. I especially love his stained glass windows at the Camp Mabry Chapel, but of course his work is all over Texas and the world. Ann take care of yourself. Love and prayers for the entire Marshall family

To Ann, Randy and Cody; I share in your grief at this time, and you have my deepest and sincerest condolences. Bruce was part of my upbringing from the time Randy and I first became friends over thirty years ago, and I have fond memories of listening to his many stories on many nights at the old Marshall family house there off 360 in Austin. As an artist and a designer, he was a true inspiration and I recall being completely amazed at some watercolor work he had done decades before I was even borna true creative genius... He also beat the pants off me in checkers. Rest in peace, Bruceyou were truly one of a kind. My thoughts and prayers with the Marshall family at this time, Victor Mabry
