Haas, Clinton Underwood

Clinton Underwood Haas, a former Stevens Point resident, 89, Palm Springs, CA, died February 4, 2013.

Clinton was born September 24, 1923, in Adrian, Michigan, to the late Lawrence and Ferne Haas. He attended schools in Adrian, Michigan and was in the Pre-Med program at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, when he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a Tech Sergeant/Radio Gunner for the 17th Bomb Group; 34th Bomb Squadron who had flown 25 missions for the United States in World War II, when his plane was shot down over Germany. He was captured and was a POW until liberated by the Allied Forces in 1945.

Upon returning from his military service, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He worked for the American Heart Association and met his wife, Ione Riedel in Marshfield WI. They were married and had two children, Paul and Melanie. The family lived in Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Des Moines, IA; Eau Claire,WI and Little Falls, MN. He worked for the Minnesota Lung Association for many years and resided in White Bear Lake, MN. He obtained his Master's Degree in Social Science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and went on to work as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Minnesota up until his retirement in 1979. The couple moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to family. Ione passed away in 1991.

While living in the Stevens Point area, Clinton was very active with the VA and the Democratic Party. He was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the State Assembly in 2002 for his work with the Democratic Party. He loved history, politics, and was an avid reader. He was also a "softy"about animals, always allowing his children their menagerie of pets. He adored his only grandchild, Ryan.

Clinton moved to Palm Springs in 2002, where he met and married Paula Saperstien in 2003. She passed away in 2005.

He is survived by his children, Paul Haas of Beaver Dam, WI; and Melanie (Harry) Obremski of Stevens Point, WI; one grandson, Ryan (Stephanie) Obremski; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Jack; sister, Marjorie of Palm Springs CA; wife, Marti of Palm Springs CA; and a nephew and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Ione and Paula and his parents.

A service will be held in Palm Springs, CA, at a date to be determined. A life celebration will be held in Stevens Point at a later date. A memorial will be established in his name for his great-grandchildren.
