Van Hecke, Dr. David C.

Dr. David C. Van Hecke died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the Kahl Home, Davenport, after a brief illness.

David C. Van Hecke was born July 20, 1930, in Stevens Point, Wis., a son of Carl E. and Leone (Johnson) Van Hecke. He was educated at St. Stephens Catholic Elementary School and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School. He entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison and transferred to Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952.

He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1956, from Marquette University. Interning at Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee and completing his four year Residency in Internal Medicine at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Van Hecke had a practice in Davenport and was a staff member at Genesis Medical Center before retiring in 2000.

David C. Van Hecke married Judy Ann McGrath on June 11, 1955, in Davenport. Mrs. Van Hecke died in 1995.

Dr. Van Hecke was a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine, Iowa Medical Society, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. After retirement, Dr. Van Hecke was a Befriender in the Spiritual Care department of Genesis Medical Center.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia "Patty" (Paul) McCarthy, Iowa City, IA; his sons, D. Charles (Cathy Baechle) Van Hecke, Jr., Chicago, IL; and Peter C. Van Hecke, Kensington, MD; and grandsons, Evan F. and Brian C. McCarthy, Iowa City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and sister, Dorothy.

Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. David C. Van Hecke will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, 2014, St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport. Private burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation is prior to Mass from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at church. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, Iowa, assisted the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kahl Home, 6701 Jersey Ridge Rd., Davenport, IA 52807.
