HARRY BLYNN On January 4, 2014 Henry Reid Blynn (Harry) passed away from complications of a long illness
in Vero Beach, FL. His wife of 36 years, Sydney, was by his side. Harry, son of Bryce Blynn and Mabel Reid Blynn of Chestnut Hill, PA, was born April 17, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA. He attended the Chestnut Hill Academy for several years. When CHA was closed during WWII, Harry transferred to Episcopal Academy from which he graduated in 1945. Harry then attended Princeton University where he was a member of the ROTC, Cap and Gown Club and a manager of the rugby team. During his time at Princeton, Harry served in the Navy. Harry received a BA in Psychology and graduated in 1949. He was President of the Cap and Gown Alumni board for many years. Harry received training at Proctor & Gamble, after which he was an advertising executive from 1964 to 1999. Harry was part of Henry Luce's inaugural team at Sports Illustrated. He came on board one year before publication of the first issue and remained 10 years, commuting to NY from Philadelphia. Harry then went to work at Aitken Kynett in Philadelphia where he was a Vice President and was instrumental in the sale of the firm to advertising giant Lewis Gilman. From there Harry went to the Philadelphia financial printer Winchell to establish an advertising division. Finally, in 1987 Harry formed his own agency, Marketing Communications Associates which he successfully built then sold to the Philadelphia firm Tierney Communications in 1999. Harry married Sydney Purviance Blynn June 2, 1978. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage and many happy years together. Their blended family consists of 8 children and step children plus 17 children and step grandchildren. Throughout his life Harry was involved with his community. He founded Delmont Youth Hockey Club in Villanova before the Flyers came to town. Early clinics involved early Flyers players from 1967-1970. He was a member or Merion Golf Club, Gulph Mills Golf Club, The Racquet Club and Riomar Country Club. He volunteered his time with Planned Parenthood of Philadelphia. His family and sailing were his passions. Family trips included summers in Baddeck, Nova Scotia where he sailed, and many bareboat sailing trips to the British Virgin Islands. In his retirement years, Harry fully enjoyed golf and fishing in Vero Beach, FL, a place dear to his heart where he had a second home. Harry was involved with local politics in Vero Beach, helping to maintain the unspoiled character of Vero Beach by electing several representatives to County government. Harry is survived by his wife Sydney Purviance Blynn, and his children, son Lewis Clarke Blynn, son Henry Reid Blynn, Jr, daughter Frances Blynn Baxter and daughter Alexandra Blynn Smith and Alexandra Van Alen Frazier, William Van Alen III, Dina Van Alen Gibson and Lucas P. Van Alen and their families. A Service will be held January 25, 11:30 AM at the Community Church of Vero Beach in Vero Beach, FL.
