JACQUELINE R. BURNS Satellite Beach, Florida Jacqueline R. Burns, 72, of Satellite Beach, passed away on Nov. 12, 2013. She was born on Aug. 8, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John "Jack" and Sally "Sadie" Lynch. Jacqueline worked for the city of Indian Harbour Beach for 36 years, serving as City Manager for 18 of those years. She is survived by her adored sister Sally O'Laughlin (Jack) of Denver, CO; children John Burns of Titusville, FL, Michael Burns (Miriam) of Vero Beach, FL, Jacqueline "Jamie" Burns of Satellite Beach, FL, and Robert Burns of Melbourne, FL; cherished grandchildren Michael, Mitchell, and Mark Burns of Vero Beach, and Sadie and Sabrina Burns of Melbourne; many nephews and nieces; and beloved companion Fred "Chief" Fernez of Indian Harbour Beach. Jackie led a full life that was defined by taking care of others. She grew up in Philadelphia. Her family experienced difficulties due to her father's prolonged illness and his passing when she was twelve, but her mother made sure that she never lacked for love. An outstanding student, she excelled at St Cyril's Catholic School and West Catholic High School for Girls, earning full ride college scholarship offers to St. Mary's and other schools. Jackie's sister, Sally, was her closest friend and confidante. Instead of attending college, Jackie chose to marry her high school sweetheart, who enlisted in the Air Force. Their first duty assignment was Biloxi, Mississippi where they had three children in three years. Through 22 years of Air Force service, they moved from Biloxi to Oklahoma; Incirlik, Turkey; Patrick Air Force Base, Florida (where Bob made them a family of six); Denver, Colorado; Sembach, Germany, and back to Patrick. Through all the ups, downs, overseas travel and times when her husband was at war, on remote assignments, or working extra jobs, Mom took care of her family! After the family settled in Satellite Beach, Jackie found the City of Indian Harbour Beach. In 1977, she started work as the secretary to the City Manager. Eventually, she was promoted to Assistant City Manager and became the City Manager 18 years ago. While working, she went back to college and obtained her degree from Barry University where she was a straight-A student. Indian Harbour Beach was "her city". She cared deeply about the employees and the city and was never too busy to see residents in her office. She treated so many residents and employees as extended family with cards, flowers, personal phone calls and visits. Her happiness was giving to others and she enjoyed bringing food and treats to her hardworking Public Works, Police and Fire Departments. She was designated a "Lifetime Member of the Indian Harbour Beach Fire Department" and was often at fire scenes and was given an official fire helmet to wear at such times. She also really enjoyed serving on the School Advisory Council at Ocean Breeze Elementary School for many years. When she wasn't busy doing for her family and friends, she loved to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. "Who is Jackie Burns?" was the question to the answer "The smartest person in the room." She had a giant African Spur Thigh tortoise, Sandy, that she spoiled. Jackie loved going to dinners, Disney World, and the King Center with her "Chief". Granny's most treasured blessings were her five grandchildren. If there was a school or family event, she was sure to attend, always bearing gifts. Spending the day at Granny's was always the most fun. There was nothing that Granny would rather do than take care of her grandchildren! Jackie had a heart full of beauty, love, caring and sharing with all of the people she touched in her lifetime. Granny sleeps with the angels. Viewing hours will be held at Beach Funeral Homes - East, Indian Harbour Beach, on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 from 4-7pm.
