Born March 24, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, to Nell Terry and Lester Helm Spalding. He graduated from Lebanon (Kentucky) High School, and received both his undergraduate (BA) and law (JD) degrees from Vanderbilt University. He also received a masters of law (LL.M) from Southern Methodist University while serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Irving L. Goldberg, Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Judicial Circuit, in Dallas.

He was engaged in the private practice of law briefly in Nashville, Tennessee, before relocating to Sarasota, Florida, where he became a partner in the law firm of Lewis & Spalding.

In 1985, he was appointed by former governor Bob Graham to head the Office of Capital Collateral Representative, a statewide public defender office charged with the responsibility of representing death row inmates in their post-conviction proceedings in the state and federal courts. He was subsequently appointed to a second four-year term by former Governor Bob Martinez.

Larry concluded his legal career as a public interest lawyer/lobbyist. He served 15 years as the legislative staff counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida. At the state Capitol, he advocated passionately for the civil rights and civil liberties of the citizens of the Sunshine State.

Larry was a strong believer in community service. He was a member of Kiwanis International for 42 years serving as club president three times: Sarasota-South, Capital City (Tallahassee) and Bradfordville (Tallahassee). He also was a division trustee for the Florida Kiwanis Foundation for 10 years.

His immediate survivors include his wife Faith (Tallahassee), his daughter Stephanie Spalding Cook(Steven), a granddaughter Parker Adeline Cook (Virginia Beach, Virginia), and a step-son Richard Blake (Miami). His brother Steven Spalding (Lexington, Kentucky) and a sister Susan Spalding Garrett (Lebanon, Kentucky).

Services will be held on April 3 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2317 Bannerman Road, Tallahassee. Burial will be held in private. Memorial contributions are welcome and should be mailed to the Florida Kiwanis Foundation, 5545 Benchmark Lane, Sanford, Florida 32773.
