Seán Hastings, 93

Worcester - Seán Hastings, 93, of South Dennis, and formerly of Worcester, died peacefully Monday, July 8th, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at Cape Cod Hospital after a short illness.

He was the son of the late Michael Hastings and Mary (Malone) Hastings. Born on High Street in Westport, Co. Mayo, Ireland, He attended Derrymore National School. Seán migrated to America and settled in Worcester, MA. He soon returned home for his now late, loving wife June (Kelly) his anam chara (Irish translation of soul friend) whom he married on August 14, 1963.

Shortly after returning to America, Seán began his life long career with Astra Pharmaceuticals in their former Worcester facility before moving with the company to Westboro.

Seán had a profound understanding of Irish culture and shared in its distinctive Celtic spirituality His love for the Irish culture transcended many generations of Irish and non-Irish in the greater area. He is credited with the growth of Worcester's bustling Irish Music and dance scene through the 70's and 80's. Seán would spend his Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings playing the best of Irish music on WICN 90.5 FM and WNEB 1230 AM with his program "The Voice of Ireland Radio Show" and traveling store "The Irish Cottage Imports Gift Store." Up until recently he continued to provide Irish step dancing schools in the area with shoes and other dance related items, keeping his interest in the Irish community alive.

A strong supporter of The Sisters of Mercy School and children with special needs, Seán organized countless Irish dances and festivals to serve as fundraisers. As a result of his countless efforts to serve others, Seán was recognized as Grand Marshall for the 1991 St. Patrick's Day Parade and presented with a Key to the City of Worcester.

Seán lived a faith-filled life and was a devoted, daily church-goer, being a member of St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth, and a former member of Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester.

He is survived by four children, Maura Hastings, Seán P. Hastings, who was his loving caretaker and friend. Sheila Hastings-Houston and her husband Donald Houston, all of Worcester, and Séamus Hastings of Middleborofive grandchildren, Caitríona, Caitlin and Douglas Houston, and Declan and Cole Hastings. He loved his children deeply and got a special joy from being with all his grandchildren, whom he cherished dearly. Seán is also survived by sisters, Beatrice Quinlan, Maeve Becker and her husband Richard, all of Worcester, Sally Ó Béarra, of Spiddal, Co. Galway, Ireland, and brother Reverend Miceal Hastings of Dublin, Ireland as well as countless nieces and nephews whom he loved and adored.

Calling Hours will be held from 4 pm until 8 pm on Thursday, July 11th at Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street Worcester. The funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 12th, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester. Entombment will follow in the St. John's Cemetery Mausoleum, Worcester.
