Mr. Valentour was born on November 18, 1949 in Marksville, LA and was raised in Bordelonville, LA. In July 1968, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and went on to serve two tours in Vietnam War. He served in Da Nang from 1969 to 1970 and in Cam Ranh Bay from 1971 to 1972. In July 1972, Mr. Valentour began employment with the Army Corps of Engineers where he served another 42 years. He was awarded the "Hard Hat of the Year" award in 1990 in San Diego, California which he received representing the Mississippi Valley Division.

Joe's position as a Construction Representative placed him in the Marine Industry involved with dredging of navigable waterways. Joe was instrumental with maintaining the Atchafalaya River and the resulting marsh and land creation during the dredging process. These areas supported bird and animal wildlife, which were important to the state of Louisiana. One of the islands in the Atchafalaya Delta bears his name "Valentour Island".

Mr. Valentour is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Gail Gauthier Valentour; his two daughters, Kerri Valentour Richardson and her husband, Brad and Katie Valentour; his granddaughter, Lexie Marie Richardson; his grandson Landon Joseph Richardson, all of Lafayette. He is also survived by his sister, Joe Ann Valentour Killeen and her husband Chris of Marksville; his brother, Rick Valentour and his wife Sandy, of Covington; his cousin Tricia Menard and her husband Peter, of Carencro and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven hours by his mother, Mary Louise Valentour and his father Joseph Elliott Valentour, Sr. in 2008.

Pallbearers will be Brad Richardson, Landon Richardson, Cory Valentour, Christopher Killeen, Peter Menard, Michael Gauthier and Daniel Gauthier.

Mr. Valentour enjoyed woodworking and tooling around in his shop. He loved his yard and took great pride in it. He considered mowing his grass his therapy. Joe was an amazing cook and was well known among family and friends for his gumbo, chicken fricassee and homemade pizza. His daughters' friends loved Mr. Joe and fondly remember the years of riding in "Old Yeller", his beloved pickup truck for many years.

He was a very hard worker and loved his family more than words could express. He loved his girls dearly, Gail, Kerri, Katie and Lexie and was absolutely thrilled when a boy, Landon, finally came along. He was very proud of his daughters and their success. After many years of working away in places like Grand Isle and Morgan City, he was very grateful for the opportunity to be close to home that gave him the chance to watch his Lexie dance and his Landon play soccer.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Joe Ann Valentour Killeen for her selfless acts by assisting during her brother's recovery. The family appreciates the great effort she put forth during her brother's illness.
